Dog Food Recall

Veterinary offices were fielding calls over the weekend from dog and cat owners concerned about a national recall of pet food blamed for causing kidney failure and death in at least 10 animals.

Menu Foods Inc., whose products are sold under dozens of brand names, announced Saturday that it was recalling 50 brands of dog food and 40 brands of cat food. The "cuts and gravy" style products, sold in cans and pouches, are marketed nationwide by retailers such as Wal-Mart, Safeway and PetSmart. Consumers kept a phone line (866-895-2708) set up by Menu Foods busy all weekend.

The Food and Drug Administration advises consumers immediately to stop using the products, listed at menufoods.com/recall, and consult their veterinarians if pets show signs of kidney failure.

Yeah.....my dad heard about that last Friday.....had a close call on that casue his dogs were OK. They dont like the other stuff & one of them HAS to have canned food.

Is that eukanuba stuff really worth the money? I have read on hunting forumns that alot of that stuff gives their dogs upset stomaches.....I was gonna give it to mine, but didn't want to make her sick.

One of the biggest side benefits to some of the premium brands if you live in town is that they are more digestable, meaning you can feed less, but the dog gets more benefit from less food. Less steaming presents for you to take care of. We live in the country and trained the dogs to "go" in the long grass away from the yard when they were pups. They never dump in the yard...ever.

I have owned Dogs for years & I can say that the Eukanuba has been one of the better foods we have used that is less expensive than some.......there are some better foods out there that can run you around $100 for a 40/50 lb bag ......while this is "top Shelf" stuff I did not see any benefits ffom it in the short time I used it .....hence going back to Eukanuba Premium Performance.

John made a very good point also that with the better grade food you do not have to feed them as much food. I have been able to keep Mason (lab) on a 2.5-3 cup per day Diet & still maintain his strength & stamina......I usually split the meals....one in AM & one at Night

...whereas ours get four cups of the cheaper stuff-the better Purina in the purple bag instead of the green bag--two cups in the morning and two in the afternoon to maintain 95 lbs each. If we added it up, we could probably make up the difference in cost with reduced volume. Dogs can even absorb the same amount of food differently. Our female is fatter, but poops once a day. Our male is normal weight, more active and poops 2+ times a day, every day, thus passes more uneaten food.

We've tried paring down the female's food, but you'd think we were starving her to death to see her. We attribute some of it to her early months. We got her as a rescue dog at nine months. I think she went without food more than a few days in her early life and will still snarf down ANY amount of food you put in front of her.

You can actually buy dogfood that can me matched to a dogs matabilizm & eating cycles......having atleast 2 fecal samples and a blood draw....you might be able to narrow it down & get her a food that works.

There is too much high tech crap anymore but there is almost always a way.....depending on your pocket book


My dads Giant Poodle has a very rare disease that took out most of his muscle mass & is on pills (steroids) to keep him going. He has to eat soft foods because he lost 50% of his jaw muscles.....it also pulled his eyes into his head a bit & makes him look very bad....especially if he wellin

My neighbor is a nutritionist for Hills and her husband is a vet. She has given me alot of insight on the reasons to feed the premium feeds (not just Hills stuff either) which would be too long to write out on here. But, there are alot of benefits for your dog to eat the good stuff as opposed to the cheap stuff.

How about cats? Will this stuff effect cats as well? Just thinking of ways to save bullets.
