    On a new note

Anybody else getting pumped for rifle season. Been getting some pics from my parents on some bucks back home. Really hoping that I can connect with one. Really miss bow hunting but with only having Friday, Saturday and Sunday one weekend a year to hunt it makes it hard to do anything but rifle anymore.

Got some decent 8's feeding in one of our meadows and a beautiful big bodied 10. Where they are feeding will leave me with a 300yd shot so definitely bringing out the 264 win mag this season. Hopefully weather will cooperate like last year and I can fish in the meantime as well.

It's all I can think about right now. Not going to be able to climb a tree though so I have a ground blind. I'm ready to lay a .300 WSM smack down on Bambi.

Re: On a new note (Duff)

Same here. I got the 243 for the timber and the 264 for the meadows. Gonna get them both going this weekend. I always hunt from the ground bob. Timber on my place is too thick to shoot from so I just sit on the ground. Helped me last year too. I had to belly crawl about 200 yds to get a 250 yard shot last year.

Gonna be a wonderful fall. Looking forward to getting revenge on Bambi myself after hitting the one last week. Cost me about $600 and I have a $500 deductible.

You prefer the short mag over the reglular Bob?

264 Win Magnum is a hot one. Pre-64? Supposedly tough to keep barrels in that sizzler if you use it a lot, but that is one flat shooting long range deer or antelope machine. Always wanted to get my hands on one.

Re: On a new note (Jiggernaut)

Yeah it is pre 64. We don't shoot it but about 5 times a year. 3 at the range and 2 on deer. 3 rounds at the range will leave a healthy wealt on ya though. Hell of a gun and shoots straighter than anything I know of. Only problem I have with them is it has to be a long range shot. I shot a 12 point a couple years ago with it at 18 yards (snuck up on me). I found 2 drops of blood. It never opened up. Out at longer range they hardly ever run far.

My grandpa bought it a LONG time ago from a guy who was selling all he had before his wife took it from him. My grandpa shot it for awhile and gave it to my dad and now I have it.

I have been looking at barrels for it. Don't really need one right now but would like to have a spare for the future. Probably going to be tough to get ahold of as time goes by.

I believe there were some commemorative type versions made recently, but a pre-64 is the sought after model. Let me know if you ever want to part with it.

I think my dad would just about skin me if I ever got rid of it. It is his baby. He just doesn't enjoy shooting it anymore. He likes sitting in the woods and having them come in much closer to him. I like seeing a speck on the horizon and watching it fall .

I figured that. Most guys who have one, won't get rid of it. They are, if not a great long range rifle, an excellent conversation piece as a lot of folks have never heard of one. They were one of the many Wildcat calibers that just never caught on despite being a good performer. As a kid, I shot a Remington .244 for antelope and deer. Most people would say, you mean a .243 right? And then I would have to explain that there is indeed a .244 rifle. Nowdays it's sold as a 6mm. Extremely close in performance to a .243, but I feel slightly better. My Dad is handing that one down to me and it will never leave my collection.

Re: On a new note (Jiggernaut)

I have thursday morning, friday night, saturday all day and sunday morning to get a buck with my bow...If not, then i will break out the rifle...we put up a 20' tower blind last night and built another blind and we say a ton of bucks in the 140-160 class range. i had a 150 eight point 30 yards from my tree yesterday morning but no shot because he was in the trees adn too many branches... If i dont get one with my bow, i am taking off the 29th

Re: On a new note (Jiggernaut)

Speaking of 243's. My ag teacher gave me my 243. I consider him my 2nd dad. He picked it up for his son and the next year his son was killed in a car wreck. he didn't have any other kids to hand it down to and he "sold it to me". One day he asked if I wanted to buy it and let me borrow it. When I went to pay for it he acted like he didn't know what I was talking about. That gun means more to me than any other in my collection.

I have killed alot of deer with it since my freshman year in HS and still use it each and every year. Never will leave my cabinet.

Nice thing about a .243 is you can easily kill a deer with it and the recoil isn't like a kick from a strong mule like some of the cannons guys use.

Re: On a new note (Jiggernaut)

Yeah I used to shoot the 264 all the time and I seperated my shoulder in high school playing football and ever since then I have a hell of a problem with trigger pull believe it or not . Still gets a little tender every now and then. Can't help but flinch

First 2 deer I got with it didn't take another step. I shoot the ballistic silver tips and they do a number on vitals (or neck shots also).

WUSS.............Not saying I'm any tougher but used to know a guy who shot Nothing but .400 Winn Mag for everything......It was Heavy Barrelled too!!! I shot it ONCE and about killed me......I have a Remington 700, Varmit special .243....which is the heavy Barrel and is fun to shoot.....Drop a 60g BTSP for long-d Coyote or pull 100g core lock for deer.....nothing special though ......used to shoot my g-pas .270 Winn...that was good gun........Had looked at a .308 once but never bought one........guy told me a .308 is great on accuracy but never looked at the #'s.
