Jason, I got a question for ya

How long was your smallie. I am trying to judge the weight of a fish. We had a guy in our club catch a 20" smallie out of Pott 2. I know yours was much bigger but the kid didn't have a scale so I don't know how big it actually was I don't have a clue who would have put him in there and I have never caught a smallie out of there period.

I had a 20" smallie in good heath from Milford that weighed in at ABA at 3.8 lbs.......I would say most will run 3.5-4lbs easily.....JMO of coarse

Re: Jason, I got a question for ya (tritonryan)

I just checked out a pic of it. It is fat as hell. I knew it wasn't a monster but I haven't caught enough smallies to judge size using length yet. It is an awful nice fish either way, especially coming out of that overfished hole. He just asked me a couple nights ago if there were fish in there. Now I think I am going to see if he'll tell me where he is catching smallies.

did you know the gurth? you can use an average bass scale using langth/gurth but I know for a fact there off by .4-.6 lbs on smallies unless you have one fat as hell.

I was figuring it was about that weight. As much time as I have spent on that "lake" I have never seen a smallie. I am guessing he was up on that flat by the damn seeing as he was on foot.

Never seen a brown fish come out of there before. That's probably the lake record.

Re: Jason, I got a question for ya (tritonryan)

On our club chart, a 20" fish is 5 lbs on the button, but it is a largemouth chart. A 20" smallmouth can be five but I would say around 4 1/2 would be more the average. I have caught one 20" prespawn in the Spring at Milford that weighed right at 5, but I also caught a 21 that weighed 5.2 and a 21 1/2 that weighed 5.6.

I believe weight and length ratios vary greater than most think. Caught an 18" smallmouth at Wilson this year that only weighed 2.7, but have caught that length before with weights well over 3 lbs. Anyway you slice it, a 20" smallie is a STUD.

Well I would say he is back in there to be caught again. The pic was taken at night so I doubt anyone but him and his buddy saw it. Either way that is a heck of a fish out of Pott and I would have taken it any day.

If that fish was 20" and healthy, it HAD to have weighed more than 3.8. A solid 17.5" fish is gonna weigh arounf 3.5 lbs....

Yea, its somewhere around 60 acres and is known as a put and take catfish place but has some ok largemouth fishing, and I guess smallmouth too... I too have never heard of a smallie coming from there. The brochure for Pott 2 says they have walleye as well, haven't seen any of them either.

I talked to the guy on our team who caught it and he said he was there for some camp out thingy so it'd be my guess he was over along the bank with all the campsites for sure. He said he caught it on a buzzbait

Re: Jason, I got a question for ya (cgs2004)

yeah.....sounds like a few community holes that existed around here.........We called them POT LUCK .....claimed they has bass, walleye, crappie and cats in it......never knew what you were gonna get.....yet on top of that....game and parks would stock trout in one of them over winter so peeps could ice fish for them and take all in the spring......could never get chance to fish it in spring with ALL the people lined up to catch trout before them killed off....usually around 60 degree water and they start popping to the top ......I did fish one of them a feew times and did manage some crappie from one spot regularly with occational bass.

Sounds to me like someone transplanted a smallie to put in there to me

I thought it might be a transplant as well but that would be a heck of a jaunt from the smallie holes around here. I would think it would be a state job but I do know of a guy who keeps smallies and largemouth in a fish tank to study how they act towards cover and it could be a deal like that. Thing gets too big and dropped it off. Who knows.

Re: Jason, I got a question for ya (chunter_ksu)

This story kinda reminds me of the Tiger Muskie I caught back in early 90's........game and parks told me there were no Tiger Muskie in the lake.....guess they were wrong there too till Bio told me that fingerling/hammerhead of pike/muskie all look the same and could have been a few mix in.....doubt that was the case on this one since Smallies and LM fry are fairly distiguisable......but them again.....if you don;t look who knows

I don't know that the fish could have hit 4 pounds if he was a lone small mouth. I would think there would have to be at least a small population JMO.

Re: Jason, I got a question for ya (chunter_ksu)

samllmouth adapt very well though. I read a nice Nebraska Biology report on smallies once and stated they were very adaptable but prefer "group" enviroments and tend to thrive better when it is that way.....but if there is not much competition that might make a difference too.........jsut some thoughts is all
