HPDI quirks?

I just bought a newer boat with a 2004 250hpdi engine. My mechanic just read the computer and said it had overheated 6 times in it's life. After talking to the original owner I found that the alarm had never gone off for overheat. Called my mechanic and was told that the water intake was designed for water being forced into it. If it is idled for too long there is a steam trap built up that can cause the alarm not to go off. Said that when I idle around looking for structure I need to rev the motor occasionally to create flow. The owner did fish a lot of no wake lakes so makes sense. The motor is in great shape so no real harm done but it does bother me that an engine can overheat with no alarm. Guess if it was too hot it would shut down. FYI.

That's real interesting. I have never heard of it before. I do fish some places that do not allow you to get on pad. Thanks for the information....RB

I have a pair of 300 hpdi engines. They came with the grill style water intakes, but I changed them out with what I call "High Speed" water intakes. These have only about 5 holes each, but it's designed with little plastic wedges to funnel the water into the intakes better.

It looks like you get less water than the grill style, but the guys at Yamaha say it's a better water intake grill for my engine. I can't comment about idling for long as I don't do that much.

I think the computer says you "overheated" when the temp spikes by 5 degrees quickly. It may have never set off the alarm however.

kbkindle here i have a 200 hpdi 2004 and when i would idle a lot plugs would get oil fouled told me to go to the next hotter plug after i did no more problems kb

kbkindle- what was the result of your plugs fouling....how fouled were they? I idle a lot in no wakes. Cold start results in a firing of the motor, and then it dies. It runs on the second try usually. Runs real rough for about a half minute then gets better while in neutral. In gear it is struggling to keep alive.

cold meaning < 40 degrees.

I would recommend a water temp guage on any rig. Also, unless your motor was made before 1995, I would not recommend changeing to a hotter plug. You increase risk of burning a hole in a piston and predetenation.

kbkindle here i had a 2002 hpdi and had all kinds of oil fouled plugs. dealer done every thing to fix would happen when i would idle to much i guess. would lose enough power i could not get it power loaded. had a wreck and totaled the motor.. they gave me a 2004 200hpdi motor in exchange but it never would oil foul plugs out. never noticed till next spring when i took plugs out to clean they were BKR6EKU PLUGS NOT BKR7EKU THAT WERE in my 2002 motor i asked yamaha what was the deal they said that was the problem need a hotter plug the BKR6EUK PLUG IS what they also use in the 150-175 yamaha hpdi kb

Good point. I wonder if Yamaha has a service bulletin correcting that. I know they have not updated the 2002 owners manual. However, I think you would probably have trouble getting a engine warratied by yamaha if you put a BKR5EUK in your motor when it calls for a BKR6EUk and it burns a hole in the piston. Just keep in mind guys you could have something else wrong and you could end up in trouble if you just go changing the plug out for hotter one's right off the bat.

It's not my boat. I wish it was. I got it out off an Xpress ad. And I don't think that is a typical Xpress. It probably has 1 battery, and 5 gal of gas. and nothing else in it. But, it looks really cool! If you want to see my boat run, click on the link under my siggy.

Yep, boatless for now. Working out the details on the new one.......will need a slight change in my avatar, just not sure which way to go yet.

It will be another Blazer. Every thing that I would've changed on my '06 is being addressed.

Just remember. Nothing says M-A-N like metal! You could go from 1niceBlazer to 1niceXpress.

I liked my 202, but looking at possibly going with a 210 this time just for the better ride. 82.9 w/ a 225 was fun, but I got in a couple of situations that bothered me, so I'm willing to give up speed for a little more comfort.

The other thing is what will be hanging on the rear. If I go to a 210, I will go to a 250 motor. Just not sure which one yet (HPDI or ProXS).
