Will the addition of ethanol in the gas we use effect our outboards?
I have a Yam. 150 four stroke.

Have you checked your owner's manual? I'm not sure, but maybe the answer is in there.
most current engines are designed to withstand up to 10% ethenol NOT Methonal - be carefull.
As with all engines, you will see a 15-25% reduction in fuel ecomony over standard fuels, therefore for every tiny amount of emissions you reduce per gallon burned you will burn much more fuel and your everall emissions will be higher and it will cost you more in the long run - not te mention your older engines will fail - but that's ok, you made a tree hugging politician look good so make sure you thank them on the next election if you have enough money to drive to the polls.
After all - it's the Amercian way![]()
Ethanol in gas. I live in Texas and all of the stations have started using ethnoal. This leaves you with two options ues it or not. I checked with Yamaha, their recommendations is to add another esternal fuel filter. A 90 gal per hr. 10 micron filter. Yamaha makes a kit for under $50.00. You shold change filters every 10 to 15 hours. Next check your fuel system often. Ethanol collects junk in your tank and adds it to your fuel, hence the fuel filter. Next you shold use Ringfree and fuel stablizer with every tank.
I hope that helps.

How do we know if our gas has Ethanol in it?? I'm in Arkansas and as far as I know ours doesnt. Do the stations post it when thats what they are selling?
It should be posted at the pumps. contains 10% ethanoll.

thanksI've not noticed it on the pumps around here so I guess we dont have it yet..
I can see less if any harm for the four strokes, but what about us guys running old (1991) 2 strokes. My understanding is that the ethanol holds water which is very bad for 2 strokes. Should I be installing one of those fuel/water separators?

No ethanol in Arkansas, yet.
When I was living out West, they used ethanol on the mid-grade gas to boost the octane rating. 89 octane ethanol was cheaper than 87 octane regular. But I was told to stay away from it in my outboard because of a varnish-like build-up on the carburetor (older model outboard).

Man, if I had to change the filter every 10-15 hours of run time, I'd never get to fish, I'd just be a professional filter changer.![]()
