'03 225 Vmax using TONS of oil

Have an '03 225 vMAX ox66 that is using about a gallon of oil for every 30 gallons of gas. I've been told that these motors are set to double oil during the break-in time and then need to be adjusted afterwards. Apparently, the previous owner didn't have this done, or at least I hope the answer is that simple.

The question is, how do I adjust the oil rod, what setting shoud it be set at and finally, where is it located ?

That's a lot of oil. Take a look at the oil pump arm and see if it's resting on the stops at the idle throttle position, if not, loosen the jam nut (8mm) and adjust the linkage till it is. Are you fouling any plugs? There was also an issue with the oil pump-to-block shaft seal leaking and oil just running down into the crankcase, producing a ton of smoke, do you see any of that?

Here's a exploded view of the oil pump....

Look up above this post to one of the "pinned" posts. The one that says "2000 VMax oil consumption" has some good info you may need. And there's pictures too!

I agree. A very small adjustment can make a huge difference in oil consumption.

Agree with all the above. As far as I know, the OX66 motors DO NOT double oil, only the HPDI's.

That is correct. The HPDI's are the only Yamahas that take care of the double oiling by themselves, it's controlled by the computer and the aux electric oil pump. The standard EFI, and carbed motors, the owner is responsible for the double oiling if needed.

Maybe it's just me but 1 gal of oil to 30 gallons of gas don't seem like it's too much. If you were premixing 30 gallons at 50:1 you would mix in 5qts of gas to get the ratio correct. So your motor burned a little less than a convential 50:1 mix. Seems about right to me. I would rather one run a little oil rich to keep it from going boom as long as it is not fouling plugs.

Junkie Bill..... 1 gal of oil and 30 gal of gas is 30:1 ratio. Our motors run in the 50:1 range.... He's burning almost twice as much as he's supposed too.

Sorry, I had my head up my @$$ when I did the math in my mind . I was thinking in quarts rather than pints. Your right, at 50:1 it should burn 80oz of oil with 30 gallons of gas.
