Turtle Creek? Turtle Lake? Some lake in Indiana...

I had a guy telling me about a warm water powerplant lake in Indiana, that had the word "Turtle" in it. Turtle Creek? Turtle Lake? Can't remember now.

He was telling me that he was out there one time fishing in the snow, and flipping grass in 80 degree water......and throwing 4 lbers back like it was nothing.

I think he meant the grass he was rolling and smoking was called turtle green.

it is Turtle Creek and it is in Tere Hute. If you go be very VERY careful if the wind is blowing. It gets like Erie fast. I have seen a guy swamp his Ranger there. It use to be only 10HP or trolling motor but i think they changed it due to the wind issue. It is great fishing though. a lot of numbers compared to the big fish it use to produce due to the fishing pressure it gets now.

Turtle Creek or Merom is just South of Sullivan, Indiana. It is a power plant lake. When it was full of grass it was one of the best lakes you could fish. Now it has no grass and I would rate the bass fishing as average to poor. It can get nasty when the wind is up but it is only 1,500 acres. It was restricted to 10 horse power motors. I have not heard that they lifted the horse power restriction.

Turtle Creek was a great Bass lake years ago. The grass was killed out several years ago now its a poor lake to fish for bass. There are a few bass there but they are few and far between .

Haven't fished it in a long time, used to fish four or five times a week, after the grass was gone. Was a terrific numbers lake when there was grass, after the grass died off it became a good big fish lake. Might only catch 5 or 6 but they'd be over 5lbs on average in my experience.

Fantastic catfish lake is the rumor now. I know the dnr and the power company added in some fish attractors to help with recruitment. That was 2001 or 2002, and I haven't been down there in that time period.

Had some monster crappie in it too, but no numbers to speak of. I miss the grass, was the best lake in the midwest for a decade or more when it was covered in grass.

I live within 25 miles of it. I don't waste my time or gas going there. It was a great big bass lake approx. 10 years ago .

haven't fished there in a while...I under stand in the last year or so,maybe longer, there was a accidental fish kill....water temp got high at the output end...here is the limit rule off the web... Turtle Creek Reservoir testing larger boat motors
Turtle Creek Reservoir in Sullivan County, one of Indiana’s finest catfish destinations, has long maintained a 10-horsepower motor limits for boats. After the success of lifting the limit at a recent fishing tournament, the reservoir’s rules are being temporarily modified to allow larger boat motors to be run at idle speed settings.

The rule modification allows fishing enthusiasts who have invested in larger boat motors to enjoy the opportunities at Turtle Creek Reservoir. If the test period is successful, the change may become permanent.

That sounds like the one he was talking about. I don't think the guy has been in years, so this would make perfect sense.

Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to go somewhere else.

Yep Scott...you do want to go someplace else. I fished there a few times years ago during it's peak time. You could load the boat with fish back then.

at one time, it was by far the best lake in the state, maybe in the top ten in the us but that was 20 years ago,you could catch 100 bass a day and have 30 that would push 7 pound each, i seen a blind guy catch 10 with a broom stick
