Don't know how many gates were open but we were 8ft over summer pool and at 100K current with 20-25 out of the north MORE than once last spring....trust me...my non boaters can attest to this fact.

    Re: KY/Barkley: Best Boat (buzzking)

No, he hasn't, but I have . I grew up in McKenzie and know all too well how rough KY gets. I spent many of days coming out of Paris and still do. There are days that the Cimmaron isn't Big enough. I still tell people around here that Old Hickory and Priest don't get as rough as our creeks do back home. Heck Big Sandy is bigger than Priest. If I still lived there and that's all I fished, I would run a 26 footer if they made it.

But to answer the original question, there are plenty of good KY Lake boats. Skeeter, Ranger, Stratos, Triton, Champion, Legend, BassCat, etc. They all make a good boat and can take KY Lake, then there are days we all need to stay at the house and talk about how bad it is out there that day.

    Re: KY/Barkley: Best Boat (rbcrawdaddy)

Rodney, that is what I am referring to. Last year we fished the Jet-A-Marine tourney. We fished out of a Ranger 392 and stayed on the northern end of KY Lake. We soon found out that the eastern side of the lake was alot rougher than the western side. I don't see how some of these guys can run all the way down to Paris and make it back without requiring a hospital bed afterwards. I am just wondering if there was one boat over another that could handle this type of situation. I even don't want to fish the BFL as a co-angler because of this situation where someone who is not as familiar with these waters can get in trouble on the water and doesn't have the experience or wisdom to know what to do.

    Re: KY/Barkley: Best Boat (JimDi)

Jim, those guys running to paris were doing so hugging the western shore line. No one in their right mind would run 40-50 miles on way in that stuff on the east side like in the jeta last year.

I don't have the cahonies just yet to run that western shore line channel near the TN state line.......if you don't know those 90 degree turns with the buoys in and around those islands, you'll be in trouble real quick.....blew through there as a co-angler riding shotgun about two and a half years ago, and needless to say I was on edge while going through that area. Seems like if I recall correctly, large stumps border that channel. I ran that channel once with my duck boat, out there hunting those islands, and well, I ran it aground just idling out there. I guess if you got a good track on the GPS, it's no biggie, but still....... Anytime I run south, I stick to the main channel, just for the sake of my sanity...and my lower unit.

Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

    Re: KY/Barkley: Best Boat (buzzking)

That is what I was thinking. First thing that morning we went to the western side of KY Lake and once we got down so far we hit the rough stuff. We tried a couple of spots on the eastern side and then went to the west side. After hitting a couple of spots on the western side we were going back to the eastern side and it was so rough I told my partner to get this SOB back to the western side. We caught about 14.5lbs in the last two hours on four fish. Couldn't get the fifth keeper. There were people still going down the eastern side and not making much headway.

The western channel down to blood river is really pretty smooth sailing at SUMMER POOL if you hit your marks. It gets a little hairy just south of blood for about a half mile then straightens out until you get just south of bird, then your best bet is to take that bending channel back out to the main until you get past those islands. There are a bunch of stump flats out there that are pretty skinny.

    Re: KY/Barkley: Best Boat (buzzking)

Ya chickens. I saw them Elites series guys running behind the Islands like they were in the main river channel. Of course I also so saw people following them freak out when they looked at their depth finders.

Seriously at 359 I will run the west bank from the dam all the way to Paris landing. At winter pool you better watch your butt even if you think your in the secondary channel. Lots of stumps one the edge of the channel .

Now Rodney, He will run the west bank on Barkley.

You guys are braver than me. I would probably be laying in the bottom of the boat praying.

Are you running these areas from experience or are you just playing the odds that you probably won't hit something??

NO, don't play the odds...ask scotty young about odds....odds are if you run around down there long enough you ARE GOING TO HIT something. In the mean time, if you don't know where you are going IDLE it once.

    Re: KY/Barkley: Best Boat (buzzking)

I know southern Barkley pretty well, but don't know southern KY. Why are all these big stringers coming off of southern KY and not southern Barkley? Is it just the time of year that one lake is on and the other one isn't?

What is the best technique to get a kicker fish? I've caught really big fish off of Barkley on spinnerbaits and rattle traps, but haven't been able to get as big of fish off of jigs/worms.

The Ford bay area would rival Kentucky if there was more of it. That part of south barkley gets beats to death by the lodge rats. Now as far as the bumpus and dover area. It can rival south KY at times but its usually the last to get going in the spring for reasons that make zero sense to me.

Scotty's wife works here. Lots of stuff to hit at winter pool, not so much at summer.

I did not here what happened to him.

We fish on southern Barkley alot and there are some weird areas. However, I have done good on northern KY too.

21 XD Bullet. The best riding, best handling, best performing boat of any in the 22' range.

Has to get mighty rough to stop a 21XD Bullet at which case no boat would be safe shy of an ocean going craft.

Dale is a smooth compared to the waves you get on Kentucky and Barkley. I've seen times that I feared the safety of the barge crews let alone anyone crazy enough to be out in a bass boat. And they can pop up verrrrrrrrrry quickly because I have been caught numerous times making a long run in good water and having to return in a mini-ocean.
