    Patoka Lake Indiana

Anybody fish it? Whats it like in mid May? What type of weights does it take to win?

The bass will probably be spawning and a few post spawn in mid May. Last year was odd because the water was extremely high. Normally the grass will be coming up nicely by that time, and other than sight fishing, that is where I would be fishing. Typical spring tournaments at Patoka will take 18-20 lbs (5 fish) to win.

I'd agree. Patoka can be tough to fish at times, but if you know the lake and hit it right weather wise and water level wise...you can catch a lot of fish. I've fished it every year since it opened in the 70's, until I moved to sunny Alabama a year or so ago.

    Re: Patoka Lake Indiana (billius)

Thanks guys. I have never been to the lake but I am going to fish a tourny there mid May this year. 18-20#'s for 5, this lake must have plenty good fish in it.
How clear is the lake at that time of the year? What kind of cover is in the lake?

More trees than you will believe. The lake is in an agricultural area, so clarity is a tossup in the spring.

The main lake is usually pretty clear (3 ft visibility) unless there has been a lot of rain. The creeks will be lightly stained to clear. The shorline is usually clay or chunk rock. There is a lot of standing timber (now broken off near the water line), so obey the idle zones if you don't know the lake. Grass is the primary cover to fish, in my opinion. It grows from a foot or two of water out to 8-10 feet. In May the grass may not be visible in a lot of places yet, but you can feel it with a bottom bait. Patoka has a lot of 3-5 lb fish in it, and I have seen 8 pounders caught in tournaments in the spring. I have seen tournaments that took over 20 lbs to win, and I have seen 100 boat tournaments that no one caught a limit.
