Can this be fixed? Magnet ring came loose on flywheel hub. 1991 Johnson 70hp

Asked two mechanics today and got two different answers.
The magnetic ring came off a 1991 Johnson 3-cyl 70hp flywheel hub. This is the target for the timerbase (I think?). Mechanic "A" says buy a new flywheel for $375.00 Mechanic "B" says clean the flywheel hub O.D. and magnetic ring I.D., get it as close as possible to being lined up like a similar flywheel, then epoxy the ring back in place. He says to then reset TDC pointer, set idle and WOT timing and do the "sync-n-link" procedure and it should be just fine.

This all started when mechanic A diagnosed a no-spark problem as a bad stator. When the new stator was being installed, he walked back to me and showed me the magnetic ring had fallen off and stated we would also need a $375.00 flywheel in addition to the new stator.

Should I epoxy in the magnetic ring and have Mechanic "A" redo the stator cranking output test?

Bomb makes a kit to re-epoxy it..... championman or one of the gurus has the p/n.....

Yep... I know about the epoxy kit. It's mainly for reattaching the V4/V6 magnets, but this 3-cyl motor appears to be glued in at the factory with some softer compound other than epoxy.
    Thanks Witchdoctor.

I don't see how you could re glue the center magnet and reset the timing to compensate as the sensor magnet has to be oriented to the key way in the flywheel, just my opinion.

Well, we have an identical flywheel off a similar motor and the inner magnet ring has distinct markings so we can index it within a degree of the good flywheel...
Is there an extremely important indexing relationship between the outer magnets for the stator and the inner magnet ring for the timerbase, or do they just have to be pretty close?

We are going to try gluing the inner back in with the Bombardier epoxy kit and then redo the cranking test this afternoon. I'll report back.

Mostly I was looking for anyone with experience with this problem.

    Thanks,

    Tom

The sensor magnet must be indexed to the key way in the flywheel.

I assumed the keyway was also indexed to the "cast in" 0degrees TDC mark on the outside diameter of the flywheel... So we used that mark as a reference since it's further from the center it makes it more accurate to eyeball it into position.
We glued it in and will fire the motor Monday to see if it works.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Be sure to check the timing above 5000 rpm according to the service manual.

The epoxy repair seems to have worked!

We let it cure overnite and retested all the cranking outputs and they were fine, so the motor was fired up and run on the hose shortly then taken to the lake and max timing reset under load. I left a mechanic there to run the boat for 1-1/2hours and everything checked out fine.
    Thanks guys.
