    Rod Repair

I broke about 10" off the tip of my F & F rod and was trying to think of the best and easiest way to do this. The action will be affected but I'm gonna give it a shot and see how it works. My first thought is to just cut the nub off and use the next guide down. My other ideas were to remove the existing guide and put the tip on or just glue the tip with the existing guide. What do you guys think? What is the best way to cut the rod if I choose to go that route?

I would say cut the existing guide off and glue the the old guide on the end Bill.

Wrap the place you are going to cut it with masking tape to keep it from splintering. A hacksaw will work fine, just get the rod stabilized as best you can.

The old tip guide is significatly smaller than the broken section. I was hoping that would work too.

I last time I tried to cut a rod for this purpose it splintered like hell. I was about 15 years younger and used some sort of snips . Tape and hacksaw sounds like the ticket, thanks.

You can pick up tip top replacements and Wally World if you decide to take the eye off and replace it with a tip top.

Bill, I broke about 4" off of an Allstar casting rod... Fixed it up like you're thinking and actually like it better... Like David said, just go to walmart and buy a set of tips (I think they come three to a pack - all different sizes.

Sounds like a good reason to buy a new one.

bill use a file and cut a groove all around the shaft, this will prevent splitting, then cut the rest away around, then the tip can just be snapped off. the corner of a file works best. I think a hacksaw would splinter too much...I have used the file trick...then after file the tip itself smooth

    Re: Rod Repair (Lykins Tr21)

Dont know if you have an old junker rod laying around, or if you can get your hands on one, but I used this little technique on one of my fly rods that my dad shut in a door and it worked really well.

Just cut about a 1in section out of the junker rod that is right at the same size above and below the section that is needing to be replaced. Just insert the two broken parts into the section from the junker rod and make sure it fits snugly (may take you a few tries to get the right piece) and then super glue both ends into the cut section, and wrap with electrical tape to keep everything in the right place until you are sure he glue is dry. Makes for a little bulge in the rod where the new section is put in, but i guarantee you wont loses any action on the rod.

    Just my .02....hope this helps

Clayton, that is an excellent idea. I have one of those junker rods in my garage that was destined for a garage sale. I think I'll give that a try.

Glue is drying...so far it worked like a charm. Picked up a small triangular file from Lowe's to cut the rod and it wroked pefectly.

    Re: Rod Repair (mastin03)

I have a guy here in southern Indiana that built me a custom spinning rod last year and he did something similar to a spinnerbait rod I broke. He used an old fiberglass rod sleeve to piece it, but instead of superglue he used resin like you put on the eyes. Worked really well, still got the soft fast tip I had before, just a bump.
