    Go TUBBY!

Sorry KY fans, Tubby has earned a lot of my respect after the turnaround he's accomplishing at Minnesota. I really like the way they're playing - and I'm an IU fan!

Wait until he gets his own player's in there. Nahhh Tubby is a great X's and O's coach, I don't think anyone would dispute that. Hopefully his recruiting will go a lot better up in the norf.

Bob Knight even went through a phase where he recruited a lot of great talent (on paper) but they didn't play for him very well and thus never amounted to anything.

I think at Minnesota, Tubby will get players that want to sign up to play for HIM, not the school. I think the whole point is that he's turned around a previously bad team. There were more than just one way this could've turned out, MN could've gotten worse or they could've stayed the same. They're winning with the same team (4 or 5 starters back), that gets my respect regarding coaching.

    Re: Go TUBBY! (JJohnSind)

I know I ruffle some UK fans feathers from time to time but I mean it all in good fun. However, in this case I think Tubby is a good coach and has MN playing hard nosed basketball!! It was a very physical game and we were very fortunate to come out of there with a victory.

It seems to me and keep in mind I grew up being a UK fan (No I am NOT kidding) that you guys cannot seem to accept that as great a program as UK is, (and let there be no doubt, I think UK Basketball is one of the top 4 or 5 sports programs in the history of sports, both pro and collegiate including basketball, football and baseball) there are LOTS of schools with great talent now and it is MUCH harder to win it all. I also think that many folks didn't like the style of "Tubby Ball." Consequently, Tubby got little if any respect, was under ENORMOUS pressure and basically was road out of town on a rail!

Now a guy that ran a clean program and seemed like a nice guy is going to have a great career in MN in my opinion because he can coach and lots of recruits know that to be true.

Re: Go TUBBY! (Passion 4 Bassin)

John you are absolutely right about the amount of talent out there and hard it is to win it all nowadays. The big problem that I had with Tubyy is, not that he only won 1 national championship, but that he was consistently middle of the road in the SEC. Yes he won a number of SEC titles but he had just as many middle of the pack seasons. Which basically equates to the, was it 5 or 6 10 loss seasons in his 10 years? For a lot of teams and coaches that would be fine, but like you said UK is one of the top programs in the country AND Tubby was the 3rd highest paid coach in the country. If all we wanted was someone who was a great guy and who would run a clean a program we could have gotten that for next to nothing. He was being paid a buttload of money to WIN and he just wasn't doing that consistently enough. I don't think anyone really expects a national title every year but I think we expect to in the hunt for it relatively often. And then on top of that the talent just wasn't coming anymore.

    Re: Go TUBBY! (dpage70)

I agree with you david, look at kansas, fla, duke, UNC, they have the high paid coaches and good programs and are consistently in the hunt, Even on bad years they are still in the top 25. With a program as historically good as kentucky we deserve what those programs have and will keep firing and hiring until we get it. The biggest disapointment to me is Rupp Arena anymore, I can't wait until the new arena is built and they revamp the seating situation. I'm so sick of all these high dollar big wigs that get these lower level seats and just sit on their butt and do the opera clap, rupp arena is not the hostile environment it once was and for the program to get back on track that needs to change as well. Kyle have they decided to build the new arena? Last I heard it was just an idea and wasn't really being pushed to hard. I agree that Rupp isn't what it use to be. They were talking about a new arena having the boxes and such which would be perfect for getting a lot of the big wigs away from the floor.

    Re: Go TUBBY! (buzzking2001)

Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence... you guys kill me. Those teams do not win their conference every year, they are on their 3 or 4 year cycle... just because of seasons past I don't think you deserve to be given a free pass... you gotta earn it. "Its a what have you done for me lately world" so why do you deserve it? Because you expect it instead of appreciating it when you do have it.

Look at Billy boy he looks like death warmed over at UK. He can't be healthy or happy doing what he is doing.

To be honest if I was a coach I would not want to touch this program with a 10 ft pole with the expectationsbeing so unrealistic. Tubby will thrive at Minnesota where they accept him for what he is.... a good coach.

    Re: Go TUBBY! (JC25)

I agree jeff, deseve should be more like expect. KY fans have the highest expectations of any out there but we're starting to see some reality come back to the fan base thanks to the tubby era, its a different game than it was 10-15 years ago and the fan base has to adjust but do I think we should be one of the top 5 programs in the country and in SEC contention every year and a sweet 16 team every year, you betcha, its in our blood

    Re: Go TUBBY! (buzzking2001)

Like Kyle said it isn't that we expect to win championships every single year, we just expect to be in the hunt for it. Yeah there's 3 or 4 year cycles, you're right about that, but the other top programs cycles are 3 or 4 good years then a down year or 2 (which is still staying in the top 25) then back to good years. Top programs of any sport have the same expectations. Alabama football, LSU football, North Carolina went through this after Dean Smith. I don't think it unreasonable to expect a top program to be at the top more than they are a middle of the pack or worse team. Tubby will flourish at MN. 20 wins a season will make him a god up there. Plus his style of ball will fit the big 10 a lot better than the SEC.

    Re: Go TUBBY! (Adam H.)

I LOVE well played half court basketball and good defense in COLLEGE basketball. A purist can appreciate screens, ball movement and the motion offense. Nothing like watching underdogs win because of coaching. A win is a win, but being able to compete with a more talented team because of coaching strategy is what college basketball is all about.

I love it when your "Princetons" can beat your "Georgetowns". (out of respect, I didn't say Gardner Webbs over Kentuckys)

You can still watch UK win, just go to the history channel.

Maybe someday soon he'll have a player he's recruited play in a final four. That would be the first one. Ever.

I imagine that Minnesota fans will be very happy with Tubby...having a coach that has won a national championship (with another coach's players ) will likely be the closest they ever get to the being able to mention men's basketball and national championship in the same sentence.

Tubby will probably get them to a few 20 win seasons...shouldn't be all that difficult given the conference he is now coaching in ...and throw in 6 -7 cupcakes each season and there ya go. Tubby's a good man and a good defensive/plodding/irritating/frustrating/make ya made as hell at the style or lack thereof offensive play coach.....and the most horrible recruiter to ever set foot at a school accustomed to winning at the big dance level.

I don't care how bad it gets at UK this year...once the last remnants of the Tubby era are outa here....things will get better. I haven't written off Billy G yet...he's been handed a silk-wrapped turd (where returning players are concerned... except for Meeks and Jasper)....regardless of the wrapping...a turd is a turd is a turd.
