    Jig help for smallies

I fish Dale Hollow once a year and never got on a jig bite. I have done ok with tubes and shakey heads. I would like to expand my jig fishing there and in my lakes around here (ohio). With the exception of erie I use heavy football jigs on my smallie lakes, shakey worms, tubes and c-rigs to get em. I would like to learn more about these jigs you guys are using to get these nice smallies. What type of jigs are they, how heavy and what kind of trailer do ya use. Are you using spinning reel and light line? Any advice would be appreciated. May be going in late March to the hollow, are jigs a good choice then?

Eakins style jig in 7/16 oz Peanut butter and jelly, or cumberland craw for color with a twin tail grub of the same color for a trailer. I use a Yamamoto twin tail grub cinnamon blue flake.
I use either a med light bait casting rod spooled with 8# line or same line on a Med Hvy spinning rod.
The more experienced ones will come along and give you more info.

Here it is, 7/16 ounce round head spider skirt with 4" Yamamoto twin tail trailer in cinnamon with purple flake.

Now, as for late March, depending on the weather the Smallies could be bedding or very close to it. At this point I would switch to wacky rigged trick worms, spinnerbaits, and carolina rigged baby brush hogs if the water was warm enough. March 30th of 07 I was catching them very shallow on trick worms and weightless tubes.

Re: Jig help for smallies (bassRN)

This is my first fall/winter on Dale so take what I say for what its worth, but I have had some great luck with a 1/4 oz peanut head jig (sold on Smalljaw.com by Andrew) with a zoom tiny chunk avocado trailer. I tie it to 8lb floro. Its been a great bait for me this year. I caught 18 fish on that set up last weekend with 2 going over 21'' and many in the 19-20.5'' range. It takes a little more patience with that smaller jig, but I'm here to tell ya, they eat it up. I've been on Dale every weekend since Nov 11th and that is the only bait I've thrown. (aside from sticking one with a jerk bait while it was blowing up on top water) Good luck!!!!!

Also, I've seen that heavier jig catch fish too!!! I truly believe you should throw what you are confident in. Right now, I believe in the peanut head.
