    Kentucky-Barkley

Just found out our regional championship for fishers of men will be on Kentucky-Barkley. I have never been there and was wondering which lake do most prefer to fish. What kind of lakes are they - river, deep or shallow, grass, laydowns, stumps ect.. and what are some good patterens for the end of September. Thanks for any help.. P.S will be leaving out of Moors Resort..

They are awesome lakes (sorry, I don't know much about them ), I'll be there for the regionals too. We've got 3 or 4 BBC teams that will be there.

I live within 3 miles of Barkley that is where I mainly fish, most locals fish the one that is the shortest trip. Barkley and Ky both have deep main channels Barkley is narrower. Barkley is smaller and has alot more structure it also is shallower than Ky the water is more stained. Both lakes has several laydowns Ky has more grass. Ky has alot of big smallmouth I could go on and on even though these lakes are joined they are very different. When the Bassmaster guys come to town most fish Ky, Barkley is easier to find fish because of all the structure but Ky seems to have a little more quality fish. In September the lakes will be in the process of the drawdown to winter pool be sure you have good maps if not on Barkley you will in 50ft. of water one minute the next you will be in 2ft. I dont bass fish in september so I cant help you there.

Both lakes should be around 3 ft below summer pool at the end of September on a normal year....we are in a big drought this year and if it does not break we may be lower than that this year around that time.

Running here at that time of year can be dangerous if you don't know the lakes real well....stay in the bouys and lay it down if you get outside the bouys and don't know for sure what is under you.

The fish are normally in fall transition at that time of year with fish shallow and fish deep. If you are interested in a tourney prep guide trip you should contact me very soon.....not trying to drum up business...I don't have to because I will be booked up in September anyway....just letting you know that if you are considering one you should make your booking soon. Either way if you check out some of my back weekly fishing reports on this site you will see some of the lures and patterns for that time of year.
