The Details You've All Been Waiting For and a Sincere Thanks to Mike & Buck!!

Ok, this has been alluded to in the previous post about the Fisher of Men Tournament so I wanted to clear the air.

My partner, Mike Cassell (Bumblebee) and me were on fish like you can't believe. We had caught our limit and had about 24 to 25 pounds so we went looking for some good fish so we could increase our total weight to about 35 to 40 pounds which we didn't think we be that big of a deal since we had held our best spot back until late in the day. However, while cruising to the spot, we were accosted and deliberately attacked by a band of hooligans. They rammed our boat and forced us onto a mud flat. We don't know who they were but they kept saying arrrrr and were slashing and threatening us with Snoopy Rod and Reel Combos!! They then took our good fish and left 3 puny ones in their place!! It was a terrifying experience. Here is a quick pic I grabbed right before they zoomed off with our fish!

Ok, the truth is we went hunting for big ones, I made a wrong turn (while idling) and we wound up stranded on a mud flat way up in Skaggs!! The tournament director came for us after we called him, but he could not get us off of the flat so Mike Daleo and Buck came to our rescue and pulled us free!!! Thanks so much guys....I really appreciate it!!!! You guys went beyond the call of duty as it was Mikes sons birthdays and he was trying to get back home early. My little detour cost him about 2 hours of time that he did NOT get to spend with his boys. I am really sorry about that but I sure appreciated the help!!

Trust me when I say if there are pictures....you will NOT want to see them, especially if you just had dinner!

Thanks again Mike & Buck and to my partner who had to put up with the entire mess! Truly a class act by those three!

And for the record we fished a little over half a day and had 3 bass for 3.47 pounds.

    Thanks again Buck and Mike!!!!!!!!

John there is a reason most people have depth finders by the driving consoles. Glad to here nobody got hurt. I guess you won't have to call the insurance people to explain. Just couldn't help the pun there.

John...I liked your first story and picture better than the second story. I usually look at my depth finder, but then that's just me. It was great of Mike and Buck to pull you off, I guess you could have gotten out and pushed!

Re: The Details You've All Been Waiting For and a Sinc ... (Passion 4 Bassin)

Thanks for the concern about my boat. It is fine however, my prop will have to be sent to Mark.

As far as a depth finder, yes I do have one. However, I don't think you guys realize just how low the lake was. In this particular area when you were in the channel there was only 2 to 3 feet of water and seriously, sometimes less! I was idling using my GPS trying to re-trace my trail from when we went up the creek. I keep looking at the trail and I was dead on the line. I really don't understand what happened, but obviously I ran out of water. I kept going until my engine quit peeing and then I had to shut it down. Once I did that it was over.....really over!! I guess you should say we were then officially, "Up a Creek"!

As far as getting out and pushing...I got out and pushed until I was wore out. Then Mike Cassell got out and we both pushed and then the tournament director came and we pushed a LOT more while he tried to pull us out! We were really STUCK and believe me I have as much pride and ego as anyone. I would NEVER have called for help unless I ABSOLUTELY couldn't get it done on my own!

    John,
Have you checked to see how accurate your GPS is? I have heard the can be as much as 15 ft. off.

Re: The Details You've All Been Waiting For and a Sinc ... (Passion 4 Bassin)

John, I'm glad that your boat wasn't damaged. Sorry about your prop. It is funny how that gps didn't direct you back the way you came. I guess I'll take this as some good advice (sorry it is at your expense) to not necessarily totally trust the trail on the gps. I grounded one of my other boats on Summit lake, here in N. Central Indiana a few years back. But I was fortunate to be able to get it off by getting out and pushing.

I plan to rely on that gps trail to get me around on Ky lake at the rally. That lake worries me some due to the shallow water, etc. I don't think the channels that go across that lake are marked as well as some other places I've been. When I was down there in September, I pretty much idled across the lake, even though I was in a channel. I don't trust those buoys that much. I was between the red and green buoys going across the lake down near Moors last September and I almost ran out of water two different times. Probably I was doing something wrong, but it made for some tense times.

Ohhhhh.............I have pics. Both on my camera phone and my digital camera. There is one shot when John first gets into the water to tie up the ropes that is probably the best "fishing experience" pic I have ever taken. I will not, however, post the pic unless John OK's it. Pitiful little sight really.

John...did you really think we would leave you out there? I would also like to say that EVERY BBC member who was at the tourney called to come out there and help. They all waited to make sure we got you out before they left.

    200 feet of tow rope......$50.00
    Replacing John's Oakley flip flops.........$60.00
    Get the prop fixed.........$150.00
    Watching a Triton pull out a Ranger........priceless.

Let me know about the pics John.

Re: The Details You've All Been Waiting For and a Sinc ... (billius)

Try to read the difference of red and green bouys at 250 yards and being partially color blind..... It gets real difficult, I live and die by the GPS. I ran across the mudhole just south of the 31 bridge sunday, looked down at the flasher, showed 2 ft. Trimmed her up and dropped the hammer. Made it through luckily, sorry bout your luck John, thats a good point on the GPS, when trying to stay in a 8 ft channel in a 6 ft boat with a GPS error or +/- 2 ft gets really interesting.
