A good night and morning at Cumberland

I got one of them wild hairs again and took off to Cumberland Friday night and as I was putting in I ran into a guy from the rally. Sorry but I`m so bad with names but knew the face. He told he`d been out all day with only 3 fish. I left the dock and headed to my points. I ended up with a few nice Ky`s and a few smallies but nothing really happened till daylight this morning. The fish wasn`t out on the main lake so I went up to 3 creeks(thats what I call it) it`s the first big creek on the left heading up towards Beaver creek. I went most the way back in the right hand fork and right off the bat got a 20 then a 21 in smallies. They was schooled up in there right on the bottom where the back bottomed out to the floor of the cove. I could see them on my depth finder. After having fun with them I started back tracking hittting the points on the way back out and managed to get a few more 15-18 inch smallies. I got most of them on a smoke tube. But I`d down line a shiner as I casted the banks,,,Had a good time. Shame I wasted my time out on the main lake,,,but I learned something.

Great to hear someone did well down there. I was there yesterday from 7:00 till 4:30 and caught 2 short fish. I spent most of my time close to the main lake and only ventured into the back of the creeks for a few minutes to look for baitfish. Guess I screwed up there. Fished a jig on points most of the day and had enough bites to keep me throwin' it...just couldn't get a hook in them. Most of the fish I saw on the graph were suspended 20' in 60' of water. I love and hate to fish the pretty days in the fall...good for the fisherman, bad for the fishin', for me anyway. Looks liike you made an exception to that "rule". Did you see any schools of bait? The only one that I saw were at 60' with the stripers. Thanks for the report and glad you had a good day

Re: A good night and morning at Cumberland (Everlytriton)

Hi there Everly, is that a rotten yellow lab in that pic?..LOL I got one too. But anyway I seen alot of bait that night up around 10-15ft. We heard and seen them flippin around out black light. But I think the lake is trying to turn, well has much as it does turn over but he as the fish messed up. I fished the main lake all night starting at Indain Creek and up the next 12-15 points. The main river channel hits them points with alot of flats running about 15-18 ft of water. All those points are killer. The best one is the real long skinny point that sticks way out in the lake with 1 lone tree on the end of it. ( ran thru that tree at night a few times when the water is up..LOL) But off that point it has a drop off starting at 18ft and drops off in the channel with a whole bunch of stumps lineing the drop. You find then,,LOL,,I stayed hung up alot there. But 2 weeks ago I limited out on big Ky`s there. But I found the fish back in the back of the first big creek on the left up the lake. They where laying at the base of where the bank hits the flat bottom. I got a few on the points back there also. The next creek up from there is really good too. I know what the bottom looks like cause I have seen the lake 100ft low. Back in 83 when i started fishing the lake is when they had been working on the dam before they started holding the water back again so I`veseen all these points bone dry. I fished that lake EVERY WEEKEND for 10 yrs till the fishing started dieing off. Back when there was Rainbow`s, whitebass and alot of walleye was there. I hope this helps some.

Heck yeah it helps. I need all the help I can get. I know exactly the point you're describing. The next one towrds Griffith Hollow is the one I at least look at if not fish about every time. Someone has put a brushpile on it since I was there in the spring. I'll have to try the one you suggeested next time. I'm having a hard time picturing the creeks you're refering to. I looked on the map and the one with three fingers that I see is at the mouth of Beaver/Otter right off the main lake close to the islands...or is it on the opposite side of the main lake?

You hit the nail on the head...extremely rotten yellow lab named Lucy, Momma says Lucy gets more lovin' than she does.

Good morning, you do seem to know alittle about the lake too. The point your talking about has a big flat on it,,,I fished of the end of it 2 weeks ago and got a 4lb largemouth of it. But the next one down towards the dam and the one after that one all have that big break with stumps on them.
The creeks (3 creeks as i call it) is almost dead across the lake from Griffith Hollow. Griffith Hollow is where I caught my big striper on the wall. It has a great bank in it too. Go back to where it forks and there is a 50 yard long bank where it forks That I`ve caught alot of fish off of. Have you tryed the next creek up from Griffith Hollow? Go back in it and there is a road bed that runs in the cove and fisf back in the cove where the road runs in and fish the road bed side to the back of that little cove. There is a BIG rock slide that I`ve done real good at too. I do real good at each end of the dam too,,,rip rap side and buff side...right in the corners. But fish the point on the rip rap side good, thats where the fish in that pic was taken and my buddy lost one even bigger.

Doug I am somewhat familiar with Cumberland too. The area that you describe as being (3 creeks) that is up lake from the dam and across from Beaver and Otter is that Rowena the Rowena Hollow as I refer to it is a big hollow with 3 large forks in it if my memory is correct. If so there is an old town under water there. Across the lake from Rowena hollow there is a another large Hollow (don't know the name) that is where the old road went down to the ferry that they used to cross the lake before it was impounded. The road on one side of the lake is still use able. I have been there a couple of times and vehicles still drive down to the water on the (Clinton Co side ?) The Russell Co side Rowena road is blocked off no vehicle access.

Re: A good night and morning at Cumberland (JR19)

Yup thats it. I`ve caught a bunch of fish in them. I almost alway fish them. The fish I found Sat was in the back of them. I need to get down there more often. But been busy and evry time I go it`s a spur of the monute thing. LOL,,Somebody will call and ask to go and I do at the drop of a hat. But I always find fish. When I started fishing the lake I figured to just take part of the lake and learn it,,,and learn it well, so I know the area from the dam to Beaver. Not to many place that way I hadn`t fished.

I am very familiar with the Rowena hollow area. In fact I have a story I want to share about that area. One year for mothers day I asked my mom what she wanted and she said a mess of bluegill. So I got some crickets and my ultralight and headed to Cumberland. Fished Guffey with no luck and moved up to Rowena and found a nest of huge bluegill. If my memory is correct I brought home 42 that weighed almost 30 pounds. Needless to say mom had more than one fish fry. Before I started getting into bass fishing with artificial bait I spent allot of time on Cumberland with live bait. I still fish it some with artificial bait but anybody that fishes Cumberland knows how that place can humble you quick. I know my way around on most of the lake from the State park down... may not catch fish but I still know my way around

SSShhhhh! We might be havin' a mini-rally down there soon and there are many eyes on here That bank in Griffith is awesome. I've caught many a smallie on it. The next one up from Griffith I've fished a couple of times. I don't recall catching too many fish in there but I always seem to stop at the road bed...guess I need to keep on going. I've fished that area, between the dam and Beaver, almost exclusively for the past 6 years in the winter...since I started fishing down there. My old boat was a 17' alumn. with a 45hp so I was hesitant to run too far...fished most of the time by myself and the boat was old. I think I caught more fish back then. I don't know if it was because I got on the water more or if I just didn't run all over the damn place "looking" for fish.

Gene, I've been humbled many, many a time on that lake. It's the good days that keep me comin back

Re: A good night and morning at Cumberland (Everlytriton)

well we all should meet up sometime and do alittle fishing. I still use live bait but do good with my jigs and my magic worm. I really like the lake but like you all said it can be tough. I`m a fun fisherman, I fish to relax and enjoy the company. I use to fish the Old Redman tournys and I seen them people are out for blood. I loved our rally because it was fun to fish with you guys that do fish tournys. I guess if I had nice boats like you all do I`d fish them more. But my little procraft gets the job done for me. But always a fussin that I NEED A BIGGER BOAT...LOL But then I`d have to buy a truck to pull it with. Hey if any of you all want to catch a bunch of sauger and walleye to eat the river is coming down and they are up here. If not fish the warm water discharges and catch 100`s of stripers..lol
