2000 efi 225 trim not going all the way down

Was fishing a tournament this last weekend and noticed my trim was moving real slow and would`nt tuck all the way under. I got it home and released the manual screw and it would go all the way in. I tightened the screw and it would go all the way up like normal, but when i let it down and got to the trim rods it would move slower than normal and stop before tucking all the way under. I stood on the back of the motor a little to try to help it go all the way and it was real spongy, would go in a little and pop back up. I can tilt it back up but i could barley get it to move until i get off the tilt rods and then it was like normal. The sevice manual referres to the tilt ram piston ball leaking or O ring, or faulty pump assembly. Just wanted to get your guys and Don`s opinion before i tear in to it.

The first step is to trim it ALL THE WAY UP, and set the safety latch.

SLOWLY remove the fill cap from the resevoir.

Check the fluid QUALITY (ensure it's not milky, or straight water).

With the boat LEVEL, fluid level should be "just to" the bottom of the fill opening (NOT spewing out).

Once fluid quality and level have been confirmed, try the trim again and see if it improves.

If not.... THEN it's time to look into internal causes (or BENT trim rods/rams).

Thanks for the reply Don, hope your feeling better! after your surgery. I will check all that and see what i find. It has been working fine until the last day of the tournement. I haven`t hit anything, just started moving real slow or just stop once it starts pushing on the trim rods. Thanks again for your help never tore into the tilt rams before. But I have changed several trim motors.

Don, I checked the fluid level looks good and no sign of water. I noticed that i can manually lift up the motor even with the manual release valve tight. So i am thinking there is something wrong in the tilt ram. Looks like I will need the repair kit #811607141 would that be correct? Any tips or sugestions, i have read over the procedure several times in th e manual and am pretty confident i can do it my self.

878408A1 (Seal/Repair Kit) would be your BEST bet, as it contains ALL seals and o-rings for the system.

Various other components "could" be causing problems... but without testing or disassembly, it's just a case of listing off lots of parts.

You can look up a breakdown of the trim system on our website:
