    help with motor selection

Roughly, how much gas mileage / speed difference would one get with say a 115etec vs a 150etec vs a 200ho etec. I'm looking at a new Hurricane deck boat, 19ft and am interested in having an etec mounted on back. They come with Yamaha 115 4stroke; but I want a simpler, lighter, faster solution. And I am interested in the etecs. Thanks for any help in making this decision. Gary

At least get the 150. The 115 Yamaha on a Hurricane is a real dog!

Welcome to the BBC Gary.......glad to have you join us.
What's the Hurricane rated for? 115 sounds small........

I was a Hurricane dealer for several years, The f115 yamaha pushes a 198 around 40mph. A f150 yam pushes to 50mph and is a much better engine for pulling water toys. I would go for the 150 but it depends on how you will be using it.

Re: help with motor selection (tnsnow)

The maximum horsepower rating on the Hurricane is 200. And I've been eyeing the etec saltwater series 200 high output. I like lots of power and acceleration. And since this particular motor is a 'big block', I figured it would have more torque / pulling power. But, I'm worried about fuel efficiency. Mainly, I'll be cruising or hauling ___. Periodically, I'll pull a water skier. And, other times, we'll go fishing. Thanks for all the replies. Is there that much of a difference in fuel economy at 1/2 throttle, 3/4 throttle, wot.

I would attempt to answer your question but about 5:30 tomorrow morning My Teacher would explain why I was wrong so I will just leave this one to Seahorse.......

Most of the time, a large engine loafing along will get better fuel economy than a smaller motor struggling its heart out.

A 200 HO Saltwater (25" shaft) would be a "trip" on a Hurricane. You would have more torque at your disposal that you could not wipe the grin off your face. Go for it, if you can.

That's makes loads of sense. Thanks ever so much for your expertise. I'm going to shoot for that 200 HO. Like all things in life; it all boils down to money.

Re: help with motor selection (RUSTY63)

Seahorse mentioned a 25" shaft? I've noticed that most motors come in either a 20" or a 25" shaft lenght. I'm guessing that has something to do with the boat/transom? What are we shooting for here? Thanks!!

Re: help with motor selection (SEAHORSE)

Bass boats usually run the 20" ers. The higher freeboard boats( boats made for heavier seas or bigger in overall capacity) with the higher transoms will need the 25 " shaft. I'm thinking you will fall in the latter catagory and as they said I would always go for max HP!!
