So a buddy of mine with a 4 cyl 115 merc (early '90's carb'd engine on a Nitro) asks me if he can do any mods to his engine. I've only messed around modding V-6 2.0,2.5 and 3.0's. Is it even worth it? Can the head be shaved and a set of better reeds benefit him at all? so sad...I popped him in his forehead and said,"jeez, I could have had a V-6"

Although I've seen a few try modding these engines (porting, reeds, timing, etc)- there's not a whole lot to be gained.
And there's definitely no option to shave the head... as it's a "blind-bore block" (no removeable cylinder head).

thanks Don, I didn't even look under cowl. I told him just to get himself a good prop and save his $$$. I'll talk him into buying a bigger boat with a 3 L in a few years after he learns the water.
