    water pump question

How hard is it to replace the impeller on a 2001 200 EFI are should I take it to the shop.
How often should you replace the impeller?

It's not hard at all as long as you are mechanically inclined. There is a great article under Sherm's tips showing how to replace one. I replace mine every spring. Cheap insurance in my opinion.

    James:

    Use these tips:

I would STRONGLY recommend a COMPLETE water pump kit (not just the impeller).

They're not that expensive... and you'll know that all gaskets, plate, cup, etc. are in good condition when you're done.

For fishing applications, your best bet is to replace the water pump ANNUALLY.

I also recommend you enlist the help of a buddy. The hardest part for me was trying to hold the lower unit up and align the spline shifter linkage (it is a floating type linkage). I finally had to get my wife out there to help after I ran of of curse words. After the fact many one here made some suggestions to help in the future....those were use needle nose pliers or a long skinny screwdriver to assist in aligning the linkage.

As for dropping the lower unit and replacing the the impeller it was very simple if you follow the guide that Mr. Sherm put together.

Also, +1 on what Mr. Don said about ordering the entire kit w/all the gaskets.

    Re: water pump question (Lockon)

Thank you, I will do that. Shouldn't be too much of a problem.
