05 XR6 150 takes some fiddling to start...

Just got this boat in the fall. I've only had it out a few times soI don't have much experience with it.
When I first launch the boat, it takes a while of me playing around with the priming bulb, choke, and idle to get her to fire up. After it gets started there is absolutely no problem with restarting it. I can turn it off, be on the TM for a couple hours, and it will fire back up within one crank.
Not sure if it's relevant, but I always trailer it with a transom saver so the motor is at a pretty good angle when stored.

Am I missing something with this motor? Or do I actually have a problem?

Try this and see if it helps:

-Before starting, set engine trim at LEVEL TRIM (this engine prefers to start and idle at level trim)

    -Pump Primer Bulb FIRM.

    -No throttle applied (idle position)

-Turn key on, push in for choke for 10 seconds (one thousand one, one thousand two... you get the picture)

-Start engine. If it tends to "sputter" out, bump key in until it "catches up" and continues to run on it's own.

-Warm starts would be essentially the same- except that no "push to choke" is needed.

    +1

I have an 03 and I follow this procedure. Usually on the 2nd or 3rd turn of the key it will start on a real cold morning. The rest of the day it is just a bump of the key. Motor being level is key on a cold start.

If you haven't already, replace your fuel lines, primer bulb and filter. The older fuel lines are falling apart on the inside due to ethanol and may clog a jet; resulting in a siezed piston. Don't ask me how I know

Thanks! So I guess this is just simply because its carbureted and not EFI? Makes sense. I plan on stripping the entire fuel delivery system in the spring and replacing it along with some other little things since I don't know much about its history. Better safe then sorry.

Just a question about the "choke", but I assumed that it was just a priming solenoid so when you press the key it gives it the same amount of fuel whether its held for 1 second or 20 seconds. Is this right? Why is it necessary to hold it for a certain time?

Welcome to the wonderful world of XR6 ownership! My 99 is so tempermental, I have given it the name B%&TCH!!! If I don't go through the same steps every time it will not start(cold or warm). Once I get it started it doesn't idle worth a damn, can't ski behind my fish and ski because it hiccups every time I hit the throttle. That being said it IS a strong motor though. Pushes my big, front heavy f/s at 56mph on the gps. Just takes time to get used to your xr6.

Follow Don's instructions and you'll be fine

The "choke" is simply an enrichment solenoid (open or closed). By holding it in for the full "ten seconds"... you're simply achieving about as rich a supply of fuel as possible (without pumping the primer bulb again).

The XR6 is a great motor. Once you get familiar with it you can work on it yourself. It has a proven track record for being a workhorse. This does come at the cost of fuel consumption though.

    Re: (blackram)

That's actually a main reason for me getting it. Carb'd engines I can do, but EFI not so much. I'm a total gearhead and I like the assurasnce of knowing that if I'm in the middle of a lake and my motor won't start, chances are I can fix it with what I have in my onboard macgyver toolbox.
The fuel economy I can deal with. I know it's not as good as injected but it's still better then I was expecting.

Just an FYI.... the XR6 (carb) 150 gets virtually the same fuel economy as the 150 EFI models.

Now moving to the Optimax and 4-stroke models, there's definitely an improvement in fuel economy.

    Re: (EuropeanAM)

When I bought mine the EFI was $3K more. I asked what the differences were and it came down to cold starting ability. LOL For that money I will turn the key 2-3 times first thing in the morning.
