Is there much difference in the engines?

Just talked with a tech at Mercury Marine. He said that on the 200 the only difference was the label![]()

That's essentially correct. VERY few differences on the 200.

The question that I have is that Mercury claims that all of there PRO XS motors have Carbon Fiber reed valves. The standard Opti's are steel.I would think that would give better throttle response at a minimum. Can anyone confirm if the carbon reeds are really in the 200 pro xs?
Thats correct the Pro XS models has fiber reeds

That's true of all BUT the 200 ProXS.
Best checked by engine serial number... as the 200 ProXS shows STEEL reeds in the parts catalog (and I have confirmed it visually on at least one engine).![]()

Yeah, Mercury said the 200 ProXS is the only ProXS without the carbon fiber reeds. They said essentailly its a Optimax with ProXS decals.![]()

What's the price difference LOL
If the engines are pretty much the same you would probably be paying quite a bit for those Pro XS stickers![]()
Okay,This debate continues.I just got off the phone with Mercury and was told the 200 PRO XS is different than the standard 200 Optimax.I questioned there advertising on the carbon reed valves and was told that all the PRO XS models have those reeds including the 200.And that they had different pistons, the same size pistons with a domed top.And the other thing that was different was that the fuel rails had higher fuel pressure.I know that Don is the Merc guru here and I have gone to him with many questions in the past and he is always on the money. So I guess my question to Don here is are they falsely stating these differences.I see that you posted earlier that you had actually seen steel reed valves in this motor. And you suggested that we check our serial numbers. What would that show, and who would you check them with to confirm. It's not right if all of us who bought a rig with a 200 PRO XS were only paying for a set of fancy stickers!
I just called again to the Merc customer care line and spoke with a Dave. He said the power heads on the 200's are identical.
Basscat!
As have been told by more then 1 merc mechanic they are the same. The 225 and the 250 use higher rai pressure, and other things. However, Mercury has to keep the @00 under 220hp and they cant do it if they made the changes to it. And yes I have been told as well there are not carbon fiber reeds in the 200 Pro XS.

That's accurate. Initially, the "plan" was to include C-Fiber reeds, and a few other items. However, the Standard 200 was already a VERY strong engine... meaning that little or no improvement could be made without falling outside the 10% margin allowed on horsepower.
The 200 ProXS still retains blue direct injectors, the 80/90 (lower) Air/Fuel pressures, etc.
The 200 ProXS is now the ONLY 20" (L) shaft model Optimax (so there's nothing really to compare).![]()
