stay away from a 99 Opti !! thats when the Optimax gained the name OptiPop ! the 99 is a whole different animal than 2000 and up, even tho Merc. had major issues in 2000-2001, 99 was a bad bad year. I have a Optimax service manuel and it says on the front starting with year 2000. To be safe if you must have it make sure and have a certified Merc. dealer run test on it!

I just googled this motor in the meantime while waiting to see if i would get any replys here & all i can say is wow, there's hardly anything good said about the early opti's, blown powerheads, poor running, pissed people, class action law suits, the list goes on & on. Im starting to think im going to pass on even looking at this boat/motor.

I have a 99 boat with 99 Opti motor. There were some problems early on with air compressors. Mine had a whole short block replacement after the bearing in the air compressor failed but that was in the first year under warranty. Mercury upgraded the design of the air compressor. Since then it has done nothing but run, and run well. Just routine maintenance required.

I had a 99 150 Opti on last boat. Flawless!!!!! It is still going strong with new owner!!!!

VERY different engines. The 99 175 EFI is built on the tried-and-true 2.5L Platform... excellent engines with a WELL proven track record.
