Mercury Tracker 90 hp shift problem

Was running across lake and loss cap went to neutral but grabbed reverse. Would not go back fully in reverse. After further investigation found the lower and upper shift shafts were slightly bent. Pulled powerhead and replaced both. Shift rod was still up againgst housing tube but got it mated to coupler. Now will not go in neutral and hard to shift to reverse but will go in reverse. Shift cable is all the way out. Do I need shift cable? Is upper shift shaft ok againsts housing tube?

    Welcome to BBC!

Strongly recommend you provide your engine's serial number before proceeding.

It may also be necessary to determine if you have a 3-jaw or 6-jaw gearcase....
