    MARINER OUTBOARD

    DON:

I HAVE A '96, 200 HP MARINER OUTBOARD ON MY CHAMPION BASS BOAT. THE MOTOR GOES INTO GEAR EASILY BUT AS SOON AS YOU GIVE IT GAS, THE ENGINE MAKES A LOUD THUNK SOUND LIKE SOME GEARS ARE NOT MESHING CORRECTLY. THE LAST FEW TIME I USED THE BOAT, IT WOULD MAKE THE SOUND ONCE AND THEN RUN FINE. YESTERDAY, THE SOUND WOULD CONTINUE IF YOU RAN AT ANYTHING OVER IDLE AND WOULD GET LOUDER AN HARDER SOUNDING IF YOU TRIED TO GIVE IT ANY GAS. ANY IDEA WHAT THIS COULD BE?

YOUR HELP AND ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

    Re: MARINER OUTBOARD (fishcabo)

I had a very similar experience with a Mercury I had a few years ago...

turned out to be the "clutch dog" (?) was incorrectly aligned or something like that. Had my marine mechanic take a look at it and he fixed it up good. Not too pricey either, as far as marine repairs go...

    Welcome to BBC!

First- let me say that I would STRONGLY recommend that you NOT RUN THE ENGINE AGAIN UNTIL THIS HAS BEEN ADDRESSED.

The sound you're hearing is METAL SHEDDING FROM THE CLUTCH DOG AND FORWARD GEAR due to IMPROPER ENGAGEMENT.

Could be as simple as properly adjusting the shift cable, a worn control box or cable, a worn clutch dog, or if it's been run enough this way... a TRASHED GEARCASE.

Get it in and get it checked....

    DON:
JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, THE PROBLEM TURNED OUT TO BE A BAD SHIFT CABLE. MY MECHANIC WENT THROUGH THE ENGINE AND FOUND NO OTHER DAMAGE. TOOK THE BOAT FOR A TEST SPIN THIS WEEKEND AND IT RAN SMOOTHER AND QUIETER THAN IT EVER HAS.

THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR TIME AND FEEDBACK.

    That's great news!

Glad to hear you got the problem resolved.

Might want to hit your "caps-lock" key before posting (turn off the caps lock), BTW... doesn't bother me, but some consider "ALL CAPS" as "internet hollering".
