Best truck transmission

Ford f-150, chevy silverado, toyota tundra. Which has best transmission? Used to get 120/140K miles out of the fords, 75 to 90K miles on the silverado, Like my present Tundra but haven't towed much with it like I did with the others. 40 years of towing 18/21ft. bass boats over the 40 years. Generally club tourneys twice a month, one prefish and 1 tourney per month. Your experience, how do the tranny's hold up now??

drop the pan, change filter & fluid every 50k (or whatever the manual says for frequent/severe use) and they'll all do fine other than something freak happening...

Nice way to provide an informative post there jeeves...there was a bad run of parts from one of Ford's suppliers but the build date has been narrowed down to between mid April - 1st week of June 2011. I think it was a pump shaft. Nonetheless, there is a known fix for it. Only other thing I've heard of is a few of them have quirky shift servos but again they have a fix for it. Both problems seem to be showing up almost immediately (<5,000mi)...

Re: Best truck transmission (ClaySlayer)

My build date was Feb. on my second tranny now. There were also clutch plate problems and bad torque converters as well. My truck still does not shift right and does some strange things. Talked to Ford many many times and the standard answer was "First time we have heard of that" There is also a problem with vibration towing heavy loads and stalling while taking off from a stop. Another was jerking when on the throttle lightly going up hills. What is the fix for the shift servo maybe we can try that next?

I am not the only person on the boards here to have these problems with their new ford truck I just didn't feel like typing and entire book complaining.

I won't even get into all the other problems like back up camera, sync, fit and finish.

2007 tundra, towes like a dream, 5.7 liter, more power than needed for a 21' boat, have been towing since i bought it new in 2007, never a problem, 140k right now never changed anything, the gearing is perfect, i had a duramax before this and it too was great but diesel being too expensive i traded it in,

It's not in your list but I love my Ram with the HEMI on 3.93 gears. It pulls a heavy boat like it's not even back there.

American truck trannies are down right a conspiracy in them selves have never had one go past 115,000 even with extensive maintenance. I've had GMC and Ford 3/4 ton trucks for 25 years and have had trannies blow as lil 26,000 miles on em. So, in short.........they suck!

I'll never have a truck that i use for heavy towing thats an automatic. Let me control the gears, and the shift points. I can replace a clutch myself, dont think i could rebuild an auto.

Re: Best truck transmission (bigtoon)

I have a 1990 Chevy Silverado Ext. Cab with a 350 @ 700R4 transmission and have used it extensively for towing various boats and a trailer with my off road toys which include a 1979 Jeep CJ-7 and 2 four wheelers. I now have 317,285 miles on it and have never had a transmission problem. As a matter of fact I've had virtually no trouble with this truck at all. I've only replaced the starter, alternator, water pump & fuel pump in all of these years. All of these repairs came between 225,000 & 250,000 miles. This truck has always had top notch maintenance including transmission fluid changes every 30,000 miles. I will add that the paint has not held up as well as the mechanical parts on this vehicle. I'm sold on Chevy & GM for life.

Re: Best truck transmission (bigtoon)

You must be a very abusive driver if you are only getting 75-90k out of silverado transmissions. I have personally seen seven (7) 700R-4/4L60E's last for at least 100K. Majority are beyond 120K with two at 150K, a couple were pulled in good working order for replacement at 100K after an abusive life. All of these have been used to tow anything from tractors to bass boats. Only one has been replaced due to failure. These are the weakest transmissions GM offers in a truck, the 4L80E is a VERY strong transmission as is the Allison.

Regardless of what vehicle you choose, by far the best thing you can do to extend the life of your transmission would be to add a large external transmission cooler. This is especially helpful if you tow with the vehicle.

Mike sorry to hear you troubles with your Ford. My 2011 F-150 FX4 w/EcoBoost has been pretty good. It has had a few "hard down shifts" but they are so random I have not taken it to the dealer. I am waiting it out.

I hope Dodge has gotten better with their transmission as they use to be notorious for failing at around 100k miles. I know from experience as I had 2 different Ram 1500's I had to put new / reman transmission in

I agree a transmission cooler is a must. I had my dealer install a large tranny cooler on my then brand new 1990 Chevy pickup before I took delivery. I believe the cooler and my strict maintenance schedule has lead to my good fortune with this particular truck.

main cause of failure is when the fluid gets over 220 degrees, it will fail soon after.
install a extra cooler in front of the radiator, use gooood synthitic fluid and watsh the temp,
add temp gauage if u dont have one.
do this and you will reduce or eliminate the chance of failure.
one more thing do a flush to remove (all) the old fluid.
or drop the pan and the plug on torque converter.torque converter must b emptied.

The standard operating temp on the new Ford is 195-215 How long do you think it will last?

You must be talking about your engine coolant temperature not your transmission fluid temperature.

No, thats is the transmission and this information is from my dealer. My transmission guages reads between 195-205 during the winter and god only knows what it will read this summer towing.

Mine reads 195 whether I'm empty or towing...highest I ever saw it was 199 after a ~3min mountain climb going 75mph the whole way up with the Skeeter in tow...

I have a 2010 F150 and have had several of the above issues, mine has been in the shop twice for coming out in the morning to go somewhere and the transmission fluid is on the driveway, torque converter 3 or 4 times, tow/haul mode went out, still shifts weird and still get the occasional violent jerk when reapplying the throttle going uphill after having to let off. This is my first and most likely last Ford. Don't know what the next truck will be. Not impressed with government motors, like Dodge but not sure how those hold up, Toyotas overpriced? What does that leave Nissan? Oh yeah I am out of warranty on F150, think they will fix anything in the future with the past history? I doubt it.

What gets me is how long have automobiles been made and we cannot make a transmission that will stay together? Unbelievable.
