    Ecoboost?

Let me hear some reviews now that some of you all have had time w/ these engines. I will be towing a Z520. Will there be a lot of shifting? My current Tahoe tows like crap and is constantly downshifting. I am thinking about buying an Ecoboost over a diesel if they tow well.

If the motor can turn alot of RPMs then it's going to shift a lot. That's why a diesel don't shift as much. All the power is at the lower RPM's.

    my 2 cents worth
    2011 Ford Fx4, crew cab, 3.5 ecoboost, 373 gears//// 07 skeeter 20i
as of yesterday,,1600 miles total on truck.... on board computor shwing overall,,19.6 mpg(this is TOTAL(hwy, towing, and local).
@580mi towing bug boat,, 14.8mpg(pretty neat that u can set computor up to keep up with separate)
my thoughts... I live in the Delta area of Ms, biggest hill for 60miles is the MISS RIVER LEEVEE. however first 600 miles was combination of tx, la hills bringing it home. and last 400 miles was to hot springs, ar(no tow). the rest was combination of back and forth to airport for work, and as stated above close to 600 miles pulling bug boat.
Right now!!,, i am happy with it, , lot better than my 5.4 v8, it DOES shift some between 5 and 6th when in tow mode, but you cant tell it, unless you look at the screen, and its not constant!!, and it does downshift when coasting to a red lite, or such.
lots of power!!, you know the boat is there, but it doesnt!!
like i said, i am happy with it, BUT, BUT,, a 5.0 mite do close to the same numbers,,, i really doubt i see the 22mpg very much under the conditions i am every day!
only negative i can say right now,,, is,,, truck sounds kinda whimmpy when u crank it up!! (kinda like cranking a weed eater)
    just my 2 cents

    That is 100% the truth.
Auto's, and their programs are being tuned to shift more and more.

I have a 2011 F-150 Lariet crewcab EcoBoost with 3:73 gears. Pulls my 188 Elite Champion with ease. Love my EcoBoost. Less down shifting than my 5.4. I also agree with the above quote.

    Re: Ecoboost? (adamat)

Have an EB w3.73 and get mileage more like 17 avg all around, 14 towing a 21' stratos 201 pro w/ a 250

I have 15k miles on it. Unlike the v8, all the torque is on the low end in the EB So it rarely downshifts, and pulls up hills at speed without even having to push much on the gas. It is impressive how quiet and smooth it is on highway towing compared to the v8 Chevys I have had over the last15 years.

For towing around a boat, it is a perfect vehicle. If you need to tow a bobcat or some big time towing, there is nothing better than a diesel, but they cost a hellova lot more to drive, fill up, buy, and are pretty noisy.

Don't believe the mileage you see on tv. But I would buy it again in a second. And it sounds exactly like a weedeater, except when you turn off the traction control and light up the tires for a hundred feet

    2011 Lariat EcoBoost w/3.55 gears

My overall is about the same as your 19.6 overall, including my towing.

I'm getting slightly better mileage while towing, though, at 15.5 overall. I live in the mountains of Southwest VA, and there's not much in the way of flat roads around here.

I read the information message on the dash computer regarding the tow/haul mode, and started to follow their direction: leave it in drive, with tow/haul mode OFF, when on the highway.

I have a feeling the reason my overall is not similarly better than your overall is that I have a propensity to drive slightly above the speed limit. When I can behave and set cruise right at the speed limit, my numbers improve noticably.

    Re: Ecoboost? (1781ccT)

update,, 3000 mi,, mph falling off a bit here lately, down to 18.3, but towing seems to be holding at 15, i think i am kinda in the same catagory of 1781c, my foot is heavy.(probally need to invest in a GOOD radar dect, been "blue litghted or stoped more in last 3 weeks, than last 10 yrs).

kinda like you shallow!, its better than anything else we have had!! i like it.

    Re: Ecoboost? (flybyy1)

And with the truck being so quiet, I'm having to get used to looking down at the dash to see how fast I'm going. All my other cars, I can listen to the wind noise and make a rough correlation to speed.

I almost think I need to change my username from 1781ccT, to 3490ccTT. The 1.8-liter turbo GTI is long gone, and now I've got the 3.5-liter twin turbo F150

    Re: Ecoboost? (adamat)

Just read that the F150 was the motor trend truck of the year and the review really praised the ecoboost - only complaint - sounded kind of wimpy - mileage was basically the same as the 5 liter but the torgue curve was really good on the ecoboost in the lower rpms where you actually use it. Can't recall the last time I turned my current F150 at 6 grand - never.

    Re: Ecoboost? (adamat)

I own a FX4 with 3.73 rear end and to be honest it is the best boat puller I have ever owned. The only engine I have ever had that came close was the old Vortec 350 but it shifted going up hills and the Eco Boost does not. I have over 15K on mine and the milage is not what they advertise for daily driving. I will say it most likely gets better mileage than the 5.0 and WAY better mileage than my 5.4! I pull a 519 on a tandem axle and in reality it does not even know it is there most of the time. My 2 cents but I do love the truck.

    Re: Ecoboost? (GClark519)

2011 Lariat with 3.73 here..I only have 500 miles so far, but it is GREAT so far. I'm getting 17 with mixed highway/city with no tonneau (hoping that helps a little).

I have a Z521 and can't wait to pull it around...

Guys, I had Darryl at Iguana make me a sticker. This should rile up the Hemi guys. (which I used to be one of and this motor blows the Hemi away)

    Re: Ecoboost? (transamz9)

I've had three, I think the first was an '04...then an '06 Hemi Sport and I think the last one was an '09 Sport. All club cab, short bed.

My comparison is only on pedal feel off the line...I haven't towed with the Ecoboost yet. Watch some of the videos on Ford's site about their torture test if you haven't already. I'm not bashing Hemi's...just having fun with it. My Dad worked at Chrysler for 40+ years and retired building the trucks here in STL.

It's not right to compare a turbo 6 cylinder against a V8. I think you need to compare a turbo 6 against another turbo 6..........

Been my gripe since the chevy 5.3 came out, peak torque at 5000 rpm. Give me a break!

    Re: Ecoboost? (Ka'King)

Tonneau cover does not increase fuel economy. Mythbusters, among others, have debunked that myth. There's even some data that shows for certain vehicles, a tonneau cover can actually hurt fuel economy.

Buy one for looks. Buy one for function. Just don't buy one to save money at the pump. I actually was planning on a soft vinyl roll-up from Truxedo or Extang for the fuel savings claims of up to 10% (by the tonneau manufacturers) until I looked further, too.
