How do you get the calipers off the ranger trail trailers? Pic inside.

Okay, I did a few searches and never found the answer I was looking for. How the heck do these come off? I've worked on cars my whole life, but never seen pins like these. I tried to loosen what I think is a cap nut on the back, but it only turns a little bit and stops and I don't want to get big with it and strip it if it's not suppose to come apart this way. Is there something special i'm suppose to do or am I correct on backing off what looks like hex pin caps?

What you have is a caliper system manufactured by Tie Down Engineering. There are two threaded rods (called pins) that the calipers slide on. The pins screw into the mounting plate and then there is a jam nut that is screwed onto the threads of the "pin" where it comes thru the mounting plate. You have a good picture of the jam nut in the photo. I believe it takes a 11/16 inch wrench. If installed properly, this jam nut was coated with red loctite so it takes a pretty good amount of torque to loosen it up.

    1) Remove the two jam nuts.
    2) Remove the two pins.
    3) The caliper is now free to slide off the rotor.

******** BE SURE to put Red High Temperature Loctite on the pin threads and also the jam nut when putting it back together. If you don't, they have a bad habit of coming apart.

Thanks, you were correct, they were jam nuts. My new problem is the stripped hex brass screw that I can't get out to refill them. Guess i'll have to take the whole hub off and try to get the bolt drilled out. This is the first hub, so i'm sure the others will be the same way. Not real impressed with this stuff. Brake mounting bracket was loose, caliper pins were loose and the fill plug is stripped and won't come out. Hopefully it holds together for tomorrows tournament. Can't drain it or fill it, so hopefully I can get it apart next week and work on it.

Forget the plug. Leave it stuck in place. You probably have end caps on your hubs that are "CLEAR" or "AMBER" in color. If you do, you want to upgrade these hubs for the "BLACK" caps that have a rubber grommet in the end for filling the hub with oil. Ranger went to these in 2007. Order new O-Rings when you get the new caps.

Getting that plug out of the hub is a pain......a big pain.

I THINK the part numbers are:

    1) Cap part number is: 9606093
    2) Rubber Gromment p/n is: 9606094
    3) O-Ring p/n is: 9606082

Yes they are Ranger parts, I did this swap back in 2008 and I still have the receipts so I got the part numbers off the receipts. You will only be able to fill your hubs up halfway with oil because the grommet is in the end of the hub but that is ok. They will run cool. Not sure what they cost now, but it was about $12 per hub back in 2008.

Thanks, I checked out tie down's site and found they list them as a 48399A through them, so I did a search online and found them for $8.99 each with o-ring and plug. Thanks again!

I had the same problem with the fill plug and I,m considering the front fill cap and plug as well
