    Ranger cool hubs

Had the boat in the garage for probably two weeks. Pulled it out on Sunday and noticed oil or fluid on the garage floor. When the seal gets bad in the cool hub will it noticable leak out without the trailer is use?

How much trouble is it to replace the seal and does anyone have any instructions to do so? Best place to get parts? Thanks.

Yes they can go bad when not in use. I had a seal go on me last summer. I had not moved it in a couple of weeks and I think the 100 degree heat played a role. Anyhow, I noticed fluid had leaked out and I looked at the oil reservior on the hub and it was about three quarters of the way down. When you get the hub apart you will see that there is nothing else that it can be other than the seal when you have a leak like that. You will need to order from ranger or go to a dealer, thats what I had to do anyway. There are probably some tutorials that you could "google". Basically though, you will need to of course take of the tire, remove the bolt and drain it all the way, pop off the silver tube or reservior, remove the bearings and also remove the two bolts that hold on the trailer brake. When you do that remember that all the lines are still attached to it so you want to set it on something so that the lines will not be stressed. The seal is in the back of the tube and dont be nervous if you have to beat it up to get it out, it is supposed to be really tight. Put in a new seal and then do it all in reverse. Sorry this is a bit vague, but it has been a while and I don't want to cause you trouble by following this to closely. It really is not too bad of a project honestly a couple hours tops. Hope this helps you and good luck.

Thanks for your help and welcome to BBC.

There is two different places with oil reserves right? Should be an inside bearing and a outside bearing. The way someone explained it to me is that the inside one is the hard one to fix because this is the one where you have to take the brakes off. Right? Should both be replaced?

Do you have a single axle trailer?? If you do and it has brakes, then yes you are going to have to pull the brake caliper off to get the hub off. If it is a dual axle and the front axle is leaking then it probably does not have brakes on it and will just pull off once you get the front nut off the spindle. There are only one oil reserves and it services the outside bearing and the inside bearing, but the oil seals is behind the inside bearing and you will need to pull the hub to change it out. If you haven't did this before on a car or other trailer, I advise you to get someone who has did it before to help you. You don't need to be alongside the road with a tore up axle and hub because it was put back together wrong.

Then you will need to pull the brake caliper off to get the hub off to replace the rear oil seal.
