    Surge Brakes disable

I have a single axle Stratos trailer with the surge brakes. Is their a way to keep the tongue from moving (collapsing) for brakes, so I can install a sway bar to pull behind a 5th wheel?

Pulling a 19' boat with a single axle trailer behind a 25' 5th wheel really makes that boat wag on the back end especially on a windy day. He has the set up for his boat and makes a big difference. His however doesn't have breaks on the boat trailer. I can't put the bar on with the tongue collapsing when we slow down. I thought maybe they had something to keep it from collapsing or temporary disable.

I bought a used boat and the guy had it drilled and installed bolts so his actuator would not move, If it is like a a-60 they have a metal clip that goes behind your front pin on the actuator to keep it from moving but not really made to stay in and the clip would still allow it to move a little but you could make one a little longer to keep it from moving. Don't know if they make anything to disable the brakes for a long period of time, maybe somebody else has had the same problem.

    Re: Surge Brakes disable (sopper609)

On the tongue of my trailer where the cylinder/actuator is located I have a slot where a key/pin goes in. When you put the key (?or whatever it is called) into the slot it prevents the cylinder from moving and that disables the brakes. The key/pin is hanging on a small cable that is permanently attached to the trailer.

That is the only way I can back my trailer up a hill when the boat is loaded onto the trailer. The weight of the load in reverse will activate the brakes so that is why they have the slot with the key/pin...so you can disable the brakes.

Sounds like a tongue weight issue to me, you can read about tongue weights and sway bars here....http://ufpnet.com/Portals/0/PDFs/A-6...aintenance.pdf ..
