I am going to recarpet my trailer bunks. I will use SS staples to attach the carpet. The manufactured of my trailer said they only use staples and do not use any glue? Should I also glue the carpet? Ed

I used 3m Heavy Duty spray glue to glue the carpet on and then I used SS staples on the underside to hold it as well.
I am hoping that the glue will hold the carpet in place so that it won't slide on the boards a wear out faster.

Here's what was recommended to me by the guy who sold me the boat carpet for me to re-do my bunks. His carpet store basically specializes in boat carpet and sells it all over the country so I took his advice.
He said.... to use indoor/outdoor waterproof carpet adhesive only on the top side so the carpet wouldn't want to bunch up when you load up the boat. No adhesive on the bottom so the water will drain out. He didn't say one way or the other about SS staples and I didn't think to use them. The way I see it the carpet will wear out before the regular tin staples rust out. I was two years into the rewrapped bunks when I sold that boat and they were still looking okay. I did go the extra bucks and used pressure treated lumber. I also pre-drilled the holes and gave them a squirt of silicone before I screwed in the lag screws.
Don't worry Ma'am....
I'm only here for the Bass.
I just completed this same project. I used contact cement on the top of the boards, wrapped the carpet as tight as I could, and used SS staples on the bottom. Oh, I also used treated lumber. The untrated wood the manufacturer used lasted 7 years, so I figure my boards will outlast the boat.
Thanks for the information. I will spray glue only the top. I was also thinking puting the boat on the trailer would stretch the carpet on the top. I have not taken the old bunks off yet since the new carpet has not arrived yet., but I think they are going to be fine,
What size staples did you use and how many? I looked at Lowes this morning and they only had SS staples in 3/8. I plan to use my Arrow hand stapler, but expect that will take a toll on my hand. Ed
I think I used 3/8 staples. I used my Arrow Heavy Duty hand stapler. I was very liberal with the staples. I stapled a bunch and then went back and added more. I bought SS staples basically just for this project, so I tacked the carpet down pretty good. Let's just say the carpet isn't going anywhere.
I just finished this same project this week. I used Cabela's bunk carpet, didn't glue the bunk carpet, and used my neighbors professional carpet tacker. The staples he had for me to use were 9/16" long 1/8" crown galvanized and used treated 2x6's. I did use 3M super 77 contact glue on the fender boards ( the wood / carpet on the inside of the wheel wells). I feel for you all that used hand staplers, but at least you won't drop any fish you lip with the iron grip you now have![]()
