Easy way to tell your hubs condition without even touching them

Many years ago I had a bearing seize and basiclly weld itself to the axle, not a pretty picture nor and easy repair. So I learned a lesson the hard way and decided that when I rebuild my hubs, I needed a way to know there condition at all times. So when you run down to your local fish'n hole pack an IR Heat Gun. Upon arrival pull out your trusty IR Heat Gun. Aim it at the hubs on both sides at the same location on each hub. Now you have a reference number as to what they should be trailering down the intersate. The temp itself will vary from numerous factors and is not that big of a deal (within reason), it's the ability to see if one side is running much hotter than the other. That tells you, that there is something going on that shouldn't be and needs to be looked at quick. It also gives you the ability to maybe drive a little slower or take some back roads to find a place to repair one or change one out if you carry a spare. I do this on long and short hauls at every stop, it takes all of 10 seconds to see if your still good to go. You can pick up an IR Heat Gun for about $30, good investment in my book.

May your wheels alway turn free

Disc brake hub temps are: normal running and stopping- 180 degrees, there should be no signs of problems....225-250 degrees- bearing protectors will leak grease on the outside, this is due to the rubber orings flatting out and grease bleeding by the orings between the blue indicator and the barrel....300 degrees- the wheel seal lips start to deform and will leak grease on the inside of the wheel.....

Good post, but a work of caution pertaining to different temps from one side to the other. I was towing a tandem trailer (car trailer with 68 Roadrunner) for a couple hours and stopped to get a bite to eat and do a walk around. I checked the left side first and they were cool to the touch. Then I checked the right side and thought I burned my fingers, on both right side rims. It took me a couple minutes (very worried minutes) until I realized the rims on the roadrunner were warm also! I was headed south, in the early afternoon, with the sun beating down. It was the shiny little sun . Had me very worried for a few minutes. Word to the wise.

I have had that happen also, I check my bearings every time I stop, some call me paranoid, but whatever, anyway several times in the evening or morning when the sun was on a particular side I thought one side was gonna burn up. Then another time I thought it was really gonna go till I reallized it was the other side that was hot this time, then finally on the way home on the trip we towed at night and both sides were cool and I felt better.....hahahaha
