when I hit the brakes my left trailer tail light goes out until I take my foot off of the brake pedal. What causes this? short or bad ground?

I would suspect a bad ground at the light fixture. A short would blow a fuse.
If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity,
nothing else matters.
I thought I had fixed it, found a loose ground screw, but still not working, ground doesn't seem to be the problem...what do I do now? this is driving me nuts...where is a ground at a light fixture?
There is a ground wire that comes out of your tail light and it needs to be grounded good to the trailer. Use a bolt and nut and ground it to the frame.
this trailer light has 2 wires that come out of the assembly itself that go to the main wiring harness and nothing else. I am considering just replacing the entire harness and starting from scratch...frustrated
You haven't changed the bulb recently have you? Sometimes putting a single filement bulb where a double filement bulb is required will cause what you are seeing. 2 circuits shorting to each other and not to ground will not neccesarily blow a fuse. That being said I would also check that bulb socket for corrosion.

I'm planning to rip it all out and replace the whole smash this afternoon...
if you are going to replace it why not run a seperate ground for each light and tie them in to the white ground from you tow vehicle. This wat the ground is easy to troubleshoot. I did that on my procraft and havent had any trouble. mcgaff1
that seems like more work...somewhere there is a problem that I can't find... if I just replace the entire harness and lights, then it has to work, right? - my truck powers my other trailers perfectly...however, I do realize that there is a better/easier way, but I want to fish tomorrow and the next day, so don't have much time to troubleshoot, I worked on this all afternoon yesterday. by the way, thanks for all your help, everyone. Russ
Well I certainly wouldn't throw away the old one and since you are replacing it you are upgrading to LED aren't you? Might as well. After you get the old one off and have a rainy day you can clean it all up and store it and maybe put it back on when it comes time to sell (?) the trailer. That or you could send me the old one and I'll use it as a spare.![]()

One last thought... Illinois state law say 1 working brake light required, not sure about Ohio. Does the left turn signal work? With brake, without brake? If so, I would just keep using it until you find the problem. Sorry Officer, it was working fine yesterday and yes I will look at it as soon as I get home.![]()

I've rehearsed what to say when I get pulled over, but I imagine everyone says, "heck it was working yesterday"... the main thing is I just hate it when something is not working as it is supposed to, it really bothers me...by the way, what are the benefits of LED llighting?
I forgot to mention that both brake lights go out when I hit the brakes, I only noticed one at first in my rear view mirror, but now I've had a person hit the brakes while I watch from the rear. does that affect the prognosis?

Brighter, longer lasting (bulbs don't burn out), operate cooler so there is less chance of thermal shock when putting the trailer in the water.

It was the tail light assembly, somehow was causing the problem, upgraded to LEDs, didn't have to replace the harness. I also learned that the trailer must be hooked up to the truck to work(ball on hitch). My triton trailer lights work even when ball not on hitch, very confusing. All is well that ends well. Thanks again everyone for your help on this. I'm goin' fishin' tomorrow...Russ
Dont rely on the ball and trailer for a ground. You should have the white wire attached to the trailer frame and to the truck frame.

I don't understand. The trailer harness IS grounded to the tracker trailer (white wire attached w/screw to trailer), but the lights only work when ball is on hitch. This is not true for the triton trailer, lights work even when not on hitch. What am I missing?
Your ground wire is not hooked to the tow vehicle or you have a break in the wire/corrosion etc.... The lights should work fine/bright w/o the trailer being on the ball hitch. Sounds like you have a break or corrosion in the white wire to the trailer. Could also be a bad connection at the plug.

Sounds like the ground to me. Take the white wire off the screw and clean the place where it makes contact with the trailer down to bare metal clean the connector on the wire and put it back together. Maybe that will take care of it.

I think my tracker trailer lights were grounded through the bolts that held the light assembly to the trailer. You might want to check that too.
