    Thread size

I would call it a spanner/retainer nut, p.n. 842519-1. It threads into the LU housing and holds the drive shaft down in place on a 3 lt sporty. Does anyone know the thread size? I can probably figure it out at work tomorrow but would like confirmation. Thanks Dean

    Re: Thread size (Strokerdean)

The part number is 824519-1...you mixed up the 2&4. But, I'm not sure of the thread size. Sorry.

Dean- are you referring to the Driveshaft Bearing/Race Retainer Nut?

If so... don't know that I've ever had occassion to determine the thread (simply replaced them when/where needed).

Don, yes that is the part. The nut isn't bad the top 1/4" of the case threads are bad. I have it at work and we are looking at different ways to try and save the case. May not be feasable to fix but need to look at my options. Considering a threaded steel machined insert with the inside machined and threaded to match the case dimensions. Thread into the case and drill and pin the insert to hold in place. Thought about welding and re-machining the case but the weld and heat affected zone would be soft. The other option is to find another sportmaster case.

    Dean:

I'm not going to say you "can't" repair this...

However, it's been my experience that once damage occurs in this specific area of the case, the case has essentially been "sprung" (resulting in a near-impossible shimming scenario).

You might be better off looking for another case.... JMHO.

    Re: Thread size (EuropeanAM)

Thanks Don, I am also looking for case while I am considering different repairs. When you say the case has been Sprung are you talking top to bottom not allowing for proper shimming of pinion gear?
What happened to the case is the retainer nut wouldn't torque properly when being put back together. The tech called me and I had him disassemble so I could have the guys at work look at a possible fix. I have to feel the pressure on the retainer nut must be tremendous as the pinion trys to push away from the ring gear.
Anyway if a good used case pops up it will be considered or possibly a new case.

Yes, top-to-bottom for pinion gear (and driveshaft end-play), as well as potentially the alignment.

You're indeed correct on the high-torque exerted on that nut (both during assembly, AND during operation).

    Re: Thread size (EuropeanAM)

I am going to get the my tech this weekend and discuss some options. I have a wealth of information and equiptment available at work to pull this off. I will let you know what I eventually do. In the mean time I bought another lower unit so the urgency is off. Again thanks for the input, I know your time is very valuable.
