I haven't been around for a while but thought I would drop in and share a couple of animals from this season. The bruin is from my yearly public land trip to Colorado. I had a bull elk tag but decided to go after a bear first. Seeing all the bear sign behind camp last year was the main reason and that I already have some really nice elk and muleys, I wanted a new challenge. I tracked this bear for the better part of 2 days by following tracks in what few patches of snow there was. The second day of season about noon I caught up with her. I would have rather taken a boar but I couldn't tell it was a sow from 275 yards. All I knew was it was big. After a brutal 25 minute wait to get a shot, I punched through both lungs with my 30-338. She went maybe 20 feet. It was my first bear and I was stoked. The CDOW estimated her at 10 to 12 years old, but I will find out for sure this spring. They pull a tooth to age bears in Co. Her estimated weight was 300 to 350 pounds. The guy that checked her in said she was large and very impressive for a sow. It snowed a foot the 4th day of season so we packed out early. Our camp got 2 bulls, one deer and my bear. My dad finally got his first bull elk, a 5x5, and decided this was his last trip. Said at 65 he just can't do it anymore. I will always cherish the trips he and I took together. Now the agonizing wait for the full body mount!
The other is the deer I got yesterday evening, which was the last day of smokepole season. He's not a monster, but the best whitetail I have ever taken. He was 168 lbs dressed and I rough scored him at right around 130 before about 5 inches of deductions. He was right at 20" outside and 17 1/2" inside.
