What do you do after you get busted?

Was hunting from a small camo chair on the ground today between two trees. About 7:30 a small fawn (which appeared out of thin air as usual) starting weaving its way towards me. It got about 6 yards before it finally figured I was there. It blew one time and jogged a few feet off, then just walked on. About 30-40 mins later I look threw one of the tree branches and see 2 shooter does about 30 yards away.

I guess they saw me first bc the front one was stomping her foot and they kept staring at me even though I wasn't moving. (Minus the loud thumping of my heart). I'm not sure if they saw me move my head somewhat before I saw them, but I was head to toe in camo, with a pine tree right behind me.

Anyways after about 30 seconds they start walking to my left, into my shooting lane and I can't even get a full draw before they bust out.

I know realize I should have been more patient, but both of their heads were down and I thought I might of had a chance. I couldn't see how far they ran, but I blew my doe bleet twice hoping it would bring them back. Set there for 30 more mins and nothing.

Should I have tried to call them, or been silent, or once they know something isn't right are they gone for the morning?

If you stay put and they do come back, they'll cautiously make a wide path around you, and you won't get a shot....

I was wondering that. I thought about moving about 40 yards to the side incase that happened. I decided to go in soon, and now I am trying to figure out if I should go back tonight, or wait until the morning even though it might rain.

Is tonight to soon, or should I chance it and hopes it doesn't rain in the am?

i would think you would want to be at full draw, with target sighted when you do this....they might not be there long.....just maybe long enough

I just sit tight, the last 8 pointer I shot came walking in after a doe busted my early in the morning...she was ridiculously close and eventually blew a few times and took off.....about 1/2-1 hr later the 8 pointer came walking right up the same trail....he didn't make it nearly so close....I shot him at about 30 yds.

just fyi, when deer stomp, it is do displace scent on their legs. It is a warning scent and most deer will smell it and get nervous. It doesn't mean they won't come around, it just means they will be more cautious. I would be back in the woods tonight, just don't sit in the same spot, and try to conceal yourself more or be more aware. I use the same approach of scanning as deer do. I move quick and stare, move quick and stare. I usually bounce from once deer trail to the next going left to right. Stop and scan for 15 sec or so, then move to the next. moving slowly will get you busted. jmho. Also, when hunting from the ground, I only draw when a deer is facing away, or behind a tree. Never with a head down. Deer can see 270* so they will spot you, trust me.

Good stuff here. The moving fast in short bursts resembles the noise of a squirrel scampering through the leaves, well with the exception of a stick breaking...most definitely have to avoid the sticks!

Depends on what deer your after, if there is many deer in the area ok to go back. Likely those two does will avoid that spot like the plague. Deer are a curious animal though and if they don't know what spooked them sometimes they will circle back to find out. I personally always move a stand or give it at least 1 weeks break after getting busted.

Deer forget quickly. I have one stand that deer frequently bed under. On many afternoon hunts, I've busted up the clan as I move into my stand. Like clockwork, they all begin to re-appear about 1/2 hour later, seeking to rejoin the group. During bow season I consider that stand to be my "gimme" stand. As already mentioned, the interdigital gland/scent will act as a warning to others, but only to be cautious. Deer don't stomp when in imminent danger for obvious reasons. I've seen deer stomp and blow at a housecat, only to have many deer walk in the same spot minutes later.
