Any suggestions out there on getting the scalp off a set of horns for mounting on a plaque? I've boiled them on the stove before, but that was before I was married and the wifes not cool with doing that now.

Is it still fairly fresh? If so a skinning knife should do it, you will just have to work it around the horns keeping pressure towards the skull plate. if it is old , I have no idea.
Find an ant bed, put the skull right in the middle of it, and put a cover over the horns and let nature do it's magic..... Works all the time !!!![]()
I boil them on my fish cooker, outside is not to bad put some borax in it and it will do the trick.
GO DAWGS
peroxide will bleach it white...as far as cleaning, i scrapped off as much as possible after nature did it's thing. professionals actually use a special type of beetles.![]()

thats the way i do it,,,if you leave it in an ant bed you have to be careful of critters coming to gnawing on them, tree rats ,racoons, neighbors dog, etc.......
what , your wife doesnt appreciate the pleasant aroma of boiling antlers ????![]()

that reminds me, a guy I know shot a pronghorn in New Mexico, but kind of a dink, so he just wanted the horns on the skull plate instead of a shoulder mount. Stuck it outside in ants or whatever, OVERNIGHT the horns on that thing were chewed to nubs!!! But they are softer horned than deer
You can also bury it in the back yard for a few months

If it's fresh cut it off with a knife and pry it off around the antler burrs with a flathead screwdriver. If it's old soak it for several days in soapy water before trying the above method. To make it nice and white take it to a taxidermist with a beetle colony. Too expensive to start one yourself. I've been a taxidermist for 20 years so I'm telling you straight.

I use a pressure washer, at the car wash if you dont have one...works better than boiling, ants or bugs.....warm water works best and it comes out white, no meat, hide or hair.....(price on bettle colonys have come down last couple of years and are available on the net)
