    Shotgun question for your Duckhunters

I haven't duck hunted in 20+ yrs. I plan on going in a couple of weeks and might only be for one hunt this yr. My question-the only shotgun I have is an old (over 30 yrs. old) Rem. 1100. Is it OK to shoot steel shot in it? Or would it be OK as long as I don't shoot too many through it? It is a full choke. May be a stupid question but I have heard both ways. Thanks, Eddie

I would say don't do it. I think if you shoot steel out of the older barrels, it will ruin them. On the other hand, I don't think one hunt would hurt anything. So I guess to answer your question.....yes, one one-day hunt would by OK....just my .02

You do not want to shoot steel shot through a full choke.

They are advising you correctly. Steelshot is harsh on a barrel, modern barrels are line with chrome and/or other alloys to handle it.

There are nontoxic pellets that will work in an unlined barrel, bismuth is one of them. I think The Bismuth Company went out of business, so I am not sure what the current sources for it are. I'm not certain about the recommendations for the other types of nontoxic, like Hevishot or tungsten iron matrix, so you'd need to look into it a little further.

Those 1100's from 30 years or so ago are better guns than Remington makes today. I'd avoid putting it through the harshness of duck hunting even if you had bismuth or another load that it could handle. It would better be used for more genteel applications, like a dove shoot.

I actually have not even shot the gun in probably 15 yrs. or more. I stopped squirrel and duck hunting. Have only deer hunted in the last few years.

Hevi-Shot makes loads appropriate for your 1100. I still use my old 1961 Wingmaster Full Choke 30" barrel 2 3/4" for Spring Turkey loaded with #4 Hevi. Sounds sentimental but I love pulling out that old Wingmaster, I bought it from a family friend when I was 13, lots of memories. IMHO Remington of our guns era were some of the greatest shotguns ever produced and should be dusted off and used!

Do NOT shoot steel in that full choke barrel.

This might be a one trip thing and since I lost my main paying job new shotgun is out of the question. I did call a buddy of mine who has pawn/gun shop and he said he could fix me up with a used older gun cheap so I might go that route. Thanks for all of the help.

Picked up a practically brand new Mossberg pump for 125. I know they are not the best or flashiest-but will do me just fine for I am going to use it for. Thanks guys!

great deal Ed. Mossbergs are pretty much bullet proff.

I had a couple goose hunters from Louisiana up here in Ontario during October. Vern and Hal Traxler, super guys but funny accent!

I can imagine! Being from the north central part of the state, we talk pretty normal for a Southerner. But some of them guys from a little farther south do talk funny, but they sure know how to cook!

which mossberg.......mod 500? either way, i believe and have enough experience with them to say they are the work horse of shotguns. use'em as a boat paddle, unload'em and have used'em to get out of mud/silt bogs etc and they have never failed me. good deal
