I was always told if you plan on running any length of time out of water to use the port on the top half of the mota, in my case where it pee's from, it unscrews out and a wtr hose can screw in, and use the muffs for short, fire up and check wtr pump function type stuff.

The manual for my motor doesnt even mention muffs, just attaching the hose direction to the output and running water through that way.

Check in the appropriate motor forum here on BBC. I was told that the screw-in hose deal was only for flushing the motor like when you run in salt and want to rinse it out. For idling on hose, use muffs....

Of course, I could have been told wrong....

This may not help much, but I always add the fuel treatment to my gas on my last couple of outings for the year...That way I know I am good....

I run marine stabil every tank full anyway, I just up the amount at the end of the year....

Running water through the flush out on the upper end of the motor does not provide water to the water pump. You will destroy a water pump in short order running the engine with water connected here. Use muffs. Lea is correct in saying the upper connection is only used for flushing the motor.
