    Tilt/Trim quit

Today while at the lake my trim quit working, it wont trim up or down. Taking the cowl off I can hear a sort of click when pressing the switch up and down. Got it back to the ramp and unknowingly loosened the fluid plug letting the fluid out before I figured the plug was on the side. Was finally able to pick the motor up, put the toter on and get it home. Any ideas what might be the problem? Its still under warranty but would rather fix myself if its an easy fix so not to be without my boat. 2008 Mercury ProXS. Serial #1B735171

    Re: Tilt/Trim quit (bassmaster,RN)

sounds like the trim motor. I have changed out a few and rebuild some. I check to see if the motor is getting 12volts by looking down inside and checking connection. also with a "mallet" wooded or rubber coted tap trim motor and keep trying trim switch if it takes off and runs get new trim motor. You maybe still under warranty. simple fix.

    Adam:

Sounds like a trim motor (testing required, of course).

There's a newer design trim motor kit... they're a bit pricey, however.

Rather than guessing.... why not give us a call to set up an appointment- you're still under warranty, and these types of problem can often be rectified quite quickly, at NO cost to you.

not sure this is a coincidence or what but lately I've had a run on trim pumps on pro XS and XS motors. Even mine went 2 weeks ago. Anybody hear of a problem with them. Hope this isn't the "coil problem" starting again. I did 5 now inc. mine in the last 2 months. Took em apart and the armatures were burned / scorched. One had a broken magnet but I'm gonna assume that broke cause the owner was smacking it with a hammer. I could see the tell tale marks of frustration on the side of it. I took mine apart and cleaned up the arm and put new brushes in it just for giggles to see if I could resurrect it. But no good. has a bad segment I guess .

There was a design/part number to the trim pump about a year ago... we've had no problems with the newer design motor itself.

this was on a 2004 and a couple of 05 and 06's Just curious if that was a reason for the design change . Haven't done any 09 thru 11's. Probably just a high hours thing.

    Re: (Bullet20dc)

The design change included a new vendor (builder) for the trim motor, better sealing properties, and as I understand it, a more durable commutator (brush) plate, as well as a few other improvements.

    Re: Tilt/Trim quit (bassmaster,RN)

sorry to hijack your post but my 08 250 pro xs did the same thing last week. every time the trim stops working, it just comes back a few minutes later. can hear the same clicking from the relays when its not working. the wires from the relays have power when not working, so i am assuming i need a new trim motor. if anyone knows how to replace it i would appreciate any ideas, thanks.

You need to verify that the wires going to the trim motor have BOTH POWER and GROUND.

If both wires have power- it's a relay problem.
