    Gear cases

I have a TorqueMaster with Titus mods, it might be bad ,still waiting on the call from the shop.
My question is are all cases with low water holes in the nose (stock units) Torque Masters?
I have been looking online for a possible replacement.

No, mercury also offers low water pickup in the fleetmaster also. You really need a heavy duty case like a TM or SM! A FM will not hold up as high as we run the cases. The easy way to tell what your looking at is all the HD TM and SM have the oil drain plug in the carrier below the prop shaft. The FM has the drain plug on the outside of the case port side up near the nose.

    What happened to your LU?

well I guess without knowing I shifted to fast and broke the clutchdog I think he said ,I am told it is not good. Seems odd because it was working perfect I just wanted to check the oil for water and found some metal chips.

big pitch props are hard on LU's. A clutch dog isn't that expensive, the gears on the other hand are. It would probably be cheaper to fix yours than buy a used one.......

Actually, that's not true. The following later-design gearcases ALL have the oil drain plug in the carrier: Verado-style, Torequmaster, Sportmaster and Fleetmaster.

The Fleetmaster is IDENTICAL to the Torquemaster- EXCEPT that it does not have the cast-in torque tab on the skeg.

For your application- probably a better choice would be a Sportmaster.... which should not require modifications.

Have they upgraded the carrier at all or just moved the plug?

    Re: Gear cases (Todd D)

Newer Torquemaster, Fleetmaster, and Sportmaster gearcases utilize the HD Racing (1-1/4" Fat Shaft) propshaft, with the matching bearing carrier (Heavy Duty).

The Verado gearcase is a slightly different animal- external propshaft is 1", but the "internal" portion is VERY beefy. Parts for this gearcase should not be confused with, or interchanged with, other gearcases.

Well I found a SportMaster with 1.62 gears and was ready to get on the water when I learned that SportMasters take about a 1/2 " longer stud to bolt it up....Oh well it is a nice weekend to sit on the porch.

    You'll need FOUR (4) 8M0045821 Studs (M12 x 65)
