    1989 Mariner 200??

I recently purchased a 1989 Winner Tournament 2000 with a 1989 Mariner 200 on it, and I know that spedos cant be trusted but I have no access to a GPS. When I took it to the lake only got it to 48 mph at 5800 rpms. Is something wrong here? I havent had a compression test done yet but will be soon. Other than not having tremendous top speed the motor runs fantastic. Any suggestions?

It could be the setup or just lack of boating experience! That sounds to me to be about the peed you would get without trimming the engine!

Take a buddy fishing that has experience with boat motors. He will be able to tell you somethings

I have a 1987 Mariner 175 HP and I can get 71 to 72 mph (gps) out of it, if that helps any. I agree, sounds like its trimed all the way down, are in. Trim it out and see what she will do.

Hey sorry guys that it took so long to get an answer back, but I have been out to the lake with a friend that has experience driving boats and that 48mph is with the motor trimmed up to where it should be at w/o the prop comin out of the water. And yes it definitely feels a whole lot faster than that but ive also been told thats just because you are on water...? Idk I would love to have a GPS/sonar put in it but dont have the $$ right now. I recently added a Garmin 300C and love it so far! Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated!

You can get a used hand held GPS off Ebay for $50.00 or less. They work for speed just like the expensive units. Buy one and carry it in your tackle box so you can call all your friends liars!!

What kind of GPS should I be looking for? Most of them dont say if they read out speed or not. If you could point me to an auction for one like you describe that would be greatly appreciated!!
