Damage from dead Tach and Battery not charging?

The tach is not working on my Mercury and the battery is not charging. I have read that this may be due to a few things such as a rectifier, voltage regulator, stator, or switch box being bad. My question is: will running the motor with the dead tach and without it charging the battery, cause any engine damage?

You might have better luck with info on this question over on the Electical/Wiring or Mercury Motor pages.

No damage. It will just run your battery down.

I beg to differ. running a motor wit a bad regulator/rectifier can cause extra voltage in the wiring leading to a Major engine fire. Replace it.

Thanks for the heads up. I was planning to have it fixed, just wanted to know if I could fish until I could get it fixed. Guess I better hurry up and have it fixed.
