good morning, this may be a basic question, but what is fogging a outboard![]()
Hi David.........
Fogging the engine is spraying fogging oil (you can buy it at any marine dealer) into each cylinder to coat the cylinder walls for storage. It prevents any rust or corrosion from developing on the cylinder walls.
Corrosion protection for long storage. Fogging oil is an anticorrosive that will protect the internal surfaces of the engine. Typically the engine will run rough just before it runs out of fuel. As that happens, give the carburetor(s) a heavier shot of fogging oil to make sure internal surfaces are fully coated.
Fog the cylinders
Remove the spark plugs and spray fogging oil into the holes to coat the interior surfaces of the cylinders. Rotate the flywheel a few turns to spread the oil on the cylinder walls. While the plugs are out is the time to check them and regap or replace as required. Reinstall the spark plugs.

The only thing i would add to that would be to wait till after you run it a little in the spring to replace the plugs if needed, just so you don't gum up brand new plugs while burning all that fogging oil up.![]()
thanks for the information guys.i fish year round and was wondering if theres anything i can use to clean motor with or will flushing it do?
I was wondering, out here on the west coast you can practically be on the water all year long. If you are able to take the boat and wet your line about once a month will that forgo having to add fuel stabilizer and fog cylinders in the winter?
Mykey, if you're running the boat once a month then you definitely don't need to fog the motor, that's just for long term storage for us unlikely guys that live north.![]()
You don't really need fuel stabilizer either but you could use it in the lower amounts meant for using all the time, not the storage amounts. It will show on the bottle.
I would also use quickleen or seafoam in every tank of gas. will keep the carbon from building up
i was told not to fog optis any truth to this?
Correct. DO NOT fog Opti's! I think its 1 oz of DFI oil that you are supposed to put into each cylinder. Ther may be something pinned on this in the Merc forum. If not you can do a search and shoukld come up with the exact answer. I'm at work so have no access to my service manual with the exact amount
