    what is proper

When you are in the river channel and a barge or powerboat is heading your way.... what is the proper way to handle the wake form this boat. Keep trim up or lower boat and try to plow through?

if you have room swing a little wide and once you pass turn into the wake, once you are in the middle straighten up and cruise on...

If the waves are really big (3-5'), I like to stay at half plane, with the nose way up, so I don't take water over the bow. If they are small, trim down and plow through, but hit them head-on, not sideways.

Question to go along with subject. Do u stay on plane or come down. You always hear in rough water get up and run the tops of waves. In a 18 1/2 boat the waves are always 19 feet apart. Any advice?

YES.....don't try to ride the tops of the waves in an 18 foot boat.....

Depending on the size of the waves, and the style of your hull, you can either run it with nose down, not full throttle, or bow up, half throttle or so.....now, this is for large waves that have you really concerned about how your boat is handling it.....

there was a time when I used to run the tops of 4-5 footers in my old blazer, but I wouldn't do that again....too much stress on me and the boat.....its not much of an issue now with the boat I have being a 1700 pound hull and 22 feet long, but on occassion, it will get really rough in places, and I just slow her down a tad until it is comfortable....

Remember though, that most 18 foot hulls are not built for rough water handling, so getting beat around a bit in really bad stuff is just something you will kinda have to live with on a smaller hull....
