Just a thought for those with a 898c 997c 998c background color to black

Just my thought but I see a lot of pics with the readouts on the left with white background... it's good but if you change the background to black it's much more transparent... works and looks really nice (at least I think so ).

Here are a couple pics I already posted in another thread with the black background on my readouts...

    A few more here... http://www.bbcboards.net/zerothread?id=733927

When the unit is operating, push the On/Off button momentarily and then choose the Background color "Black". "Blue" is another choice.

Push the On/Off button to turn off the pop-up menu.

I also turn my background color to black when running at night...makes it easier to look at the map, then water, and back again without messing up your night vision too bad...

"very, very, good tip for those who are not happy with the big numbers on the left side of screen!!!!!!!"

I certainly like it with the black background... The display has been debated a ton on many of the forums with these units... but if you run these in split screne most of the time as I do... you're basically still getting use of the full screen (for the most part). You do lose the left side a bit though if you're running SI only as the SI screen will not run behind the digits display. The beauty of the 898 series (don't know about the x97's) and up though is that you can customize how big/small the left and right screens are when running split screens. I typically keep SI on the right side at max screen right and run left at 20% or whatever that is. I think if HB would have black as the default mode which kind of clears up the back ground as seen in my pics above... that would be a little more useful when looking. I was skeptical too before buying. The one thing I will say though with these units... is that I do agree with Wayne that these units could certainly be brighter. I would bet HB will brighten them up down the road. The little 798 I have is certainly a better unit in the sun, but the 800/900's aren't that bad when run in Amber 1 or Amber 2. Other than that, I'm a fan of the 800's & 900's and think they're a pretty good bang for the buck.
Maybe I need to change occupations and see if HB would add me to staff so they can load my boat up with the biggest and best!! Then again, I know I'd go hungry because even with the gadgets I wouldn't outfish anyone... After not fishing for a loooong time... I have had fun getting back on the water again. It's incredible how much electronics have changed over the last 10-15 years...
