    Finding bass beds with SI

Can Doug or anyone tell me if Humminbird SI is capable of finding bass beds in deeper water? If so, does anyone have an image to show what they look like on SI? Any related information is appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Finding bass beds with SI (JFB)

I saw some bream beads on my 798 over the weekend so I suppose it would show bass beds. Wish I had taken a snapshot of the bream beds, they showed up real well.

A resounding YES. That is how I sight fish without actually seeing the bass. It will show beds in shallow or deep water, IF the bed is a depression and not just a clear spot on a hard bottom area or against a stump, boulder, etc. I look more for the fish than a bed itself and have seen bass beds in the same area of blue gill beds, they are usually more than three times the diameter of a bluegill bed and a lot more scattered. Bass tend to have some immovable object in the bed like a plant root, tree root, larger rock among smaller gravel, etc.
Here is a group of bluegill beds, note depth. The visibility was less than 1’. I caught a 4# and 3# bass there after taking the snapshot. The small white streaks are fish.

Thanks guys. Keep the examples and shared experiences coming.

I ask because I have a tourney where smallmouth are expected to be still spawning in the main lake on a deep clear natural lake so I hope to find the remaining stragglers spawning with SI.

Where I am from most beds are close to stumps so even if you cant see the bed you can see the stumps where most beds will be.

I got this screen shot a couple of days ago. This is some more beds, the larger ones are bass beds and the smaller ones are blue gill beds. I caught one of the two bass that were together in this image (2 1/2#)

Some of the individual beds have two gills on them.
