A little shade from the sun for anglers

Recently my wife said it would be nice to have some shade for those hot days when we are out on the lake. Well being the inventive man I am I came up with a unique idea that is cheap and works quite well. I got a patio umbrella and cut the pole down to about 8 inches below the bottom of the material when the umbrella is collapsed. I then got a piece of chain link fencing pipe 11/2" inside diameter pipe of about 2' long. What I do is when she wants shade I take the back seat off the seat post and slip the pipe over it. This leaves about a foot of the pipe over the top of the seat post which I then slide the center post of the umbrella in. Because the umbrella is for a patio set is large enough to provide a lot of shade, true she has to sit in the regular seats to continue fishing or come up front with me but when its 95+ out and you just want a little shade it sure is nice.

Good idea, I have seen a bracket that mounts to a seat post to hold an umbrella.

As it just slips over the leaning post.

We have been out in wind about 10-15 with no problems. If the wind gets up much more than that I head for a cove or some other protection as Lake Chickamauga is big and the wind can cause some nice sized swells.

I built something simular for my wife useing PVC pipe. I used two tee fittings on the post and one 90 degree and a tee fitting connected to those. It set the umbrella far enough out the seat could be used so she could fish in the sun or rain. As far as being durable I just closed it up and wraped a bungy around it when moving from spot to spot and it holds up fine. Get one that matches the color of your boat and people dont make fun of you for useing it either. Last winter we were out and it was pouring. I could not even keep a smoke lit and she is sitting in the back with her hood off kicking back nice and dry.

That is really a great idea. I think I am going to put another post receiver a couple of feet behind the post receiver on the front of my boat so that I can put an umbrella over the front fishing seat on my boat. I don't care if people make fun of me, at least I won't get cooked in the Texas sun and will be able to stay out in the heat of the day....

I've got an old golf umbrella that I keep in the boat. It's come in handy several times. Once to duck out of a small hailstorm and a couple of other times to just cop a little shade for a couple of minutes.
    Don't worry Ma'am....

I made one out of some pvc. Looks like the letter H with two cross bars. You need 4-tees some short section of pvc and a plug. One side slips over the seat post and you can put the seat back on. The other side I put a plug in the bottom where it rests on the deck. I used a two piece sun umbrella I found at Walmart. Drilled a hole through the pvc and the umbrella pole so I could put a pin in it.

The first version caught an updraft by the dam and flew away so that is why I added the pin. Keeps the wife happy.
