On a jon boat forum I used to visit (the Army blocked that site) I was told I should line the outside of the bottom of my boat.
I fish in a very rocky shallow river.
What do you guys think? is there a smooth coating?

All I've herd is that they have been putting this on fiberglass hulls, and they roughness of the liner makes the boat a little faster. But it would seem like it would do really good for an aluminum boat.
I had a 20' Jon with that stuff inside and out. It was absolutely indestructable. I would highly recommend it.
Mine was also painted with a camo pattern. I'll see if I can dig up some pics.
How's this stuff work on a fiberglass hull? Does it stay on long or does it crack and peel? Do they make different colors?
You just have to watch the weight of it . LINE-X weighs 9 lbs per sq-ft that is what the guy said that owns the local dealership.

That seems a little heavy. That would mean that a truck bed 6 feet long, 5 feet wide, that is lined to the rails would add approximatley an additional 450lbs? That just seems like that weight estimate of 9lbs per square foot is too high.

If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten.
I would recommend a product that the air boat guys us. It is UHMW. I have it on the bottom of my river boat. It takes some work and requires screw, but if done right you boat will not leak and last for ever. You can go to http://www.riversmallies.com and learn more about guys doing this to there boats.
I'm currently re-doing an old jon boat. I've already painted it with Parker's Duck Boat paint and plan to line the (runners) on the bottom and the entire inside floor with Herculiner. I'll post photos as I go.
p.s. The Parkers makes it look like NEW
Thats what i thought to but that was what the dealer told me.
I think he may have mis-spoke⦠what does a gallon weigh? Say 15 pounds and if that gallon covers just 15 sqftâ¦3âÂÂx 5â then itâÂÂs just 1 pound square foot⦠and as it dries, it would get lighter as the liquid in it is evaporated.
I donâÂÂt know I have never used any of it. but that does seem extreme.
Does anyone know of a sooth liner for the outside?
I looked on riversmallies, and that looks like a lot to do. I want something simple to give just a little more protection.

It would seem that a Cubic Ft. may Weigh that much. It is applied at what maybe 3/16 thick so the weight would not be that much.
I just did a jon boat inside and out, but I used the polyurathane coating sold at Bass Pro Shops..cheaper and just like Rhino![]()
look at the durabak. just got sample and info from web site.durabakcompany.com loooks good and im going to get some and do the floor of my duck boat later in the spring. comes in several colors smooth and tectured.
Yes the UHMW is a lot of work, but I was just putting it out there for a option. Lots of luck with your project.
I have actually heard from a few friends who really use and abuse their jons that it really doesn't work all that well. Especially on the chines, as they are most prone to damage, it just scrapes off, and you are back to square one.
