Cleaning rod handles

The quickest, easiest, and cheapest way is to use rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. Just lightly wet the paper towel with the alcohol and rub the cork. It take just a few seconds and leave them clean and new looking. Does not harm the cork. Works for cleaning your rods too !!!

Lava soap & a sponge will clean handles quicker than anything.

The problem with using soap of any type is that most cork has little / medium sized holes / pores in it. If you don't rinse out the soap completely, they may be kind of slippery later on down the road when it rains.

I've used the alcohol trick to clean up my rods for many years now. Never harmed the cork or rod finish, and since the alcohol evaporates quickly, there is nothing left on the rod to come back and haunt me later.

I use denatured alcohol. You get 1/2 gallon at home depot in the paint section for $3 or $4.

Wrap the handles with tennis wrap, never need to clean, can color code also... change wrap every 2-3 years...

I wrap mine too. I like the larger diameter for my big hands and use different colors to tell what rod is what without hardly looking. WalMart sells the wrap in the tennis racket isle for 1/10th of what bass pro gets and it's the same thing.

I go to the auto parts store and buy the hand cleaner towels in a dispenser that you can pull out one at a time and tear off . They already have the cleaner in the towels and just rub your handles and rods just like you were cleaning your hands. The look like new and are squeaky clean in just a couple of minutes. Throw the towel in the trash and your done. They are also good just to have around the garage for cleaning your hands or about anything that you need to take dirt, oil or grease off of.

If you clean the handles with alcohol......will that cause them to get "dried" out and more brittle over time?????? Just curious

Yes it will. I use laundry detergent with a warm water. I apply it using a fine tooth brush and gentley scrub. I do this twice a year and my rods look brand new 5yrs down the road. Alcohol does clean it very well, but as mentioned it will dry out the cork and over time it will get brittle and break off easily. The laundry detergent actaully mositurizes it, helping it maintain it's new appearance and shape.

Just tried the laundry detergent......and it works awesome! I should have thought of it before......because we use it to wash engine blocks prior to painting because you dont have to rinse it forever and it doesnt leave a residue. Good tip!

rubbing alcohol to clean rod handles, don't work I've tried it. used a 400 grit sand paper, best thing on the market to clean cork with.

cleaning powder for sinks comet cleanser on a wet spronge or scrubber. Just wet the handle sprinkle on sponge on towel an scrub a bit and rinse off and let dry. Been doing it for years and works perfect.

Alcohol will not dry out cork causing it to get brittle or deteriorate. I have been using alcohol for years and never a problem with it.

Just a thought - If you drink the alcohol, dirty cork will not bother you!
